See Cameron Diaz's acne on HDTV!

Camerond_3 Remember when aging screen stars like Norma Desmond could hide behind favorable lighting and a soft lens? Well, according to entertainment magazine OnHD.TV, some of Hollywood’s finest aren’t quite ready for their close-ups. (If you want to read the New York Post's pick-up of the story, click here.) Among the celebrity flaws noticeable on high definition TV are Cameron Diaz’s acne, Brad Pitt’s crater face and Joan Rivers' facial seams. On the other hand, 23-year-old Anna Kournikova has nothing to hide and Catherine Zeta-Jones is “absolutely gorgeous.” If you believe the hype, HDTV’s inevitable apex could mean the decline of Max Factor. With such high res pictures, actors may soon be relying as much on the digital effects editors as they do on their makeup artists. Just remind me not to watch my home movies on HDTV.

This phenomenon has been well known since HD came into use. One camera manufacturer—BTS—in the mid-'90s offered a software filter for then-upcoming HD studio cameras, to soften facial blemishes and even exaggerated pores suddenly noticeable with HD resolution.

But another aspect should be considered: The decline in the art of portraiture in Hollywood. HD can not explain why in the filmed-and-projected theatrial projects such as Austin Powers ex-model Elizabeth Hurley's pitted skin was obvious in certain boudoir shots; why ex-model Uma Thurman's stretch marks were so apparent in her introductory scene in Be Cool; or why the January 28th cover image of Hillary Swank is about the least flattering picture of any woman since Charlize Theron was relentlessly campaigning with her publicity-stunt makeup for Monster.
