Why are cows planning to invade New York?

Cowstressball1Can someone help us solve the mystery of the cows? We’ve missed them, but apparently there are ads in the New York subways that say, “The Cows Are Coming. May 12th,” according to an AdFreak reader who hoped that our “insider knowledge” could tell her why the cows were coming and why they’d picked May 12th to arrive. Sorry, though the breadth and depth of our insider knowledge is legendary, we really don’t know about this one. Said the reader, “I have tried to Google the slogan, the date, and everything I could think of to no avail. Does this make me obsessive and somewhat sad? Probably, but I don't care.” To help unravel the mystery, we’ve included a picture of a cow stress ball from the Office Playground site that our reader says looks a lot like the cow picture in the teaser ads. If you’ve got a clue about this, please write in so New Yorkers can prepare with mega-pooper-scoopers or whatever.

In Chicago a few years ago, we had cow statues all around the city. They were painted different colors and people would take pictures in front of them to share with friends (though I can't think of a more uninteresting subject for a photo opt). It was all the rage and the subject of many news stories, perhaps New York is doing the same thing....

http://newyork.cowparade.net/ ??

(Disclaimer: Not only don't I have insider info, I haven't seen the ads.)

I can't believe this is not linked into Bovine Unite somehow. Two guerillal campaigns launching around the same time featuring cows seems a little coincidental. And even though i've read that Bovine Unite has something to do with the Maryland State Lottery, I'm not buying that.

Posted by: Scaramouch | Apr 27, 2005 1:00:35 PM

it's not the cow parade, i'm sure of it. the poster shows the little squeezy cow pictured in the blog entry, only it's facing front.

Posted by: madcaprin | Apr 27, 2005 1:55:16 PM

It's got to be cow parade

Posted by: Piers Fawkes | Apr 27, 2005 5:08:36 PM

i do not think it is cow parade either.
it is also not chick-fil-a nor fatburger
(theories of friends) i looked at the bovine unite website and the cow in the subway ad is a bit too cute (in my humble opinion) - i am absessed too! someone please help.

Posted by: donna | May 2, 2005 12:20:13 PM

The cow parade happened in 2000 and was in NY before Chicago.

Posted by: jason | May 2, 2005 1:49:10 PM

hey all -
i have seen the bovine unite stuff all over baltimore. there were people in cow costumes giving out "bovine unite" business cards. the billboards around town say that "c-day" is 05-05-05, and to watch telelvision at 8:59 pm. sorry i don't know more... i don't really buy the chicken restaurant or the lottery thing, either...

Posted by: baltimore | May 2, 2005 8:45:27 PM

hey - me again - i found this on the adland.com blog - may shed some light and makes sense that it would be a soy milk or organic food company doing an ad campaign...

Shucks, why didntcha just ask us first?, by Dabitch on Apr 19 2005 [reply]
It's quite likely a viral for Organic Valley Milk. The clues:

It appears that Organic Valley was giving away "Bovine Unite" posters as a premium for people who participated in an "advisors survey" Already way back in early January. Scroll down to find "Free Bovine Unite Poster and $5 in Organic Valley Coupons" link. Sadly, google does not have a cahche of the link.
Red Peg are specialists in "event marketing" and viral stuff. Ta to adlister Stacy for the freebitz link.

I forget sometimes how many things you guys actually cover. Thanks for the reveal.

Looks like you should have asked here first.

Posted by: baltimore | May 2, 2005 8:57:39 PM

I just called the MTA to ask about the "Cows are Coming" posters. They are for Nestle CoffeeMate according to MTA's advertising division.

Posted by: Stacie | May 3, 2005 12:02:17 PM

it's chick-fil-a. it has to be. that means breakfast biscuits on May 12.

Posted by: liz and diana | May 3, 2005 8:33:05 PM

biscuits! biscuits! biscuits!

ya'll got biscuits in baltimore don't you...

Posted by: liz and diana | May 3, 2005 8:39:07 PM

i just assumed it was the opening of a movie

Posted by: | May 6, 2005 10:00:32 AM

Maybe it's Nestle, and maybe it's a new creamer they're debuting.

Maybe next Monday or Tuesday you'll see cows roaming around the city. No, they're not real!

Maybe there will be some cow give aways on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Maybe those giveaways are little stress balls.

Maybe a contest will be announced that asks you to look at a website on Thursday morning. Maybe at 10 am.

Naybe you'll need to race somewhere to win a contest.

Maybe it's Bryant Park.

Just a bunch of maybes.... :)

Posted by: Maybe? | May 6, 2005 5:29:01 PM

i'm sure is a new movie about the cute cows in the ads. if its not then please let me know, its driving me crazy

Posted by: aaren | May 7, 2005 7:35:17 PM

hey people...im glad that we have cow luvers here hehe...i am goin MAD over figuring out this whole cows coming to NYC on May 12th...and i was so obsessed that i was trying to steal one of the posters to keep for myself (dont tell the authorities)...but if what "baltimore" says is true...that the advertisements are for Nestle...then Nestle has finally made its advertisements cool...i was really hoping it would be literally a bunch of cows coming into the city parks or something so we can check them out and pet them and what not...ack oh well

i hope i can steal one of those posters soon lol =)

Posted by: divinebovine | May 7, 2005 11:10:13 PM

Come on, people! Ignore my "maybes"!

I'm telling you what's going to happen!

Posted by: maybe | May 8, 2005 11:51:59 AM

My folks say there's ads in Pittsburgh, too. That lends credence to Maybe's story -- it's not just an NYC think.

Posted by: Tom | May 8, 2005 5:38:27 PM

On thurs May 12 The PBS show nature is broadcasting an episode Holy Cow about the history of cows around the world. Check pbs listings

Posted by: Sheila | May 8, 2005 8:33:25 PM

So the cows are coming!!! & I've been waiting for this thursday since i first saw the ads... the mystery intrigues me- my presence in NYC May 12 is imperative- I will be there when the cows come!

Posted by: Phebe | May 9, 2005 7:57:14 AM

P.S. Successful snagg of one certain subway poster... how can i resist these cows are adorable!!!

Posted by: I <3 cows | May 9, 2005 8:05:15 AM

And the domain name thecowsarecoming.com is registered to Nestle.

Posted by: JEB | May 9, 2005 8:24:42 AM

i must know why the cows are coming!

Posted by: tammy | May 9, 2005 8:26:41 AM

Get ready for the cows over the next couple of days.

Get one of those stress balls. Hopefully it says Vanilla or Hazlenut!

Be at Bryant Park Thursday morning, and you'll have a chance to race for $50,000.

I don't want to have to say "I told you so"

Posted by: Maybe? | May 9, 2005 12:33:57 PM

These cow's are cute

Posted by: jack | May 9, 2005 2:18:29 PM

I work at Nestle corp hq in Glendale, CA ... admittedly not in the Coffeemate division ... we've been seeing these posters in the elevator lobbies for a few days and even we didn't know what they were for. Funniest -- when I try to go to thecowsarecoming.com from the Nestle intranet, I get a 403 Not Authorized error. What are you guys getting?

I googled to this site and I am so glad you've solved the mystery for me.

Hey Maybe?, do I work with you? LOL

Posted by: | May 9, 2005 5:05:55 PM

yes i must get one of the stress balls. too cute, especially with the little smiles.

although i did find these on the web... but theyre not free like the nestle ones will be...

Posted by: Roo | May 9, 2005 5:37:35 PM

The cow is an exact match of the gateway cow that is given to you when you buy a new computer from them, at least when I bought one many years ago, I got a cow exactly the same, I checked gateways website but found no evidence.

Posted by: JP | May 10, 2005 12:34:09 AM

I just saw 2 cows on the subway being questioned by a cop... I asked if I could take their picture.. i did, but gotta upload it through my usb wire.. so then the cop tells them to get off at 14th st & go in for 'questioning'. he actually took them off the train.
i'll post the pics when i get home.

Posted by: vindaloo | May 10, 2005 11:23:05 AM

So apparently I'm not the only nut job going crazy about "the cows are coming". Its probably a cow activist doing a protest on cow cruelty.. Stop the breast-feeding!!! Only one can wait and see.....

Posted by: Marlene | May 10, 2005 11:28:54 AM

Thank you!!! I thought I was the only one who googled this phrase to find out what in the world this cow ad meant, I really want to know. The sad part about it is that I googled this on May 10 with only 2 days left to find out what the madness is all about when at this point I should jusst wait. But you just can't tease us like that. Or should I be worried that out of all the ads posted on the train I have found the cute little cows to be such an enigma, Maybe I should just get a life.

Posted by: franchesca | May 10, 2005 11:31:37 AM

Hey guys,

It's the AdFreak editrix here. Though I have this weird feeling this whole cow event will be anti-climatic, if any of you truly are going to Bryant Park, could you take a picture with your phone for us and comment...? thx. Cathy
P.S. if you take a pic send it to comments@adfreak.com

Posted by: Catharine P. Taylor | May 10, 2005 11:54:15 AM

catherine, marlene, francesca.... I really don't know what they were up to, but they were very blasé about it all. The woman cow (the guy was also a cow, not a bull.. he had nipples) said for me to look at the web site www.thecowsare....bla bla..u know.. and I did and it does say to wait and see. Well, i'm not really that interested in all this hype, i'd rather go out for a coffee with one of you darlings.

Posted by: vindaloo | May 10, 2005 2:59:05 PM

If you go to www.thecowsarecoming.com and check the source youll see an image linking to
http://ehg-nestleusainc.hitbox.com

so its definately a nestle thing.

Posted by: bongo | May 10, 2005 3:04:36 PM

i have been anxiously awaiting the cows. i am trying to convince my papa to take me to work with him on thursday. i just love cows!!!!!!

Posted by: gippee lin | May 10, 2005 3:38:36 PM

I've seen these ads on the tops of yellow cabs too. When I logged on to thecowsarecoming.com, all I see is something that says to check back at 10 AM EDT on 5/12, and a countdown timer at the bottom.

Posted by: 9346 | May 10, 2005 4:55:12 PM

Nestle owns the domain....

Posted by: chase | May 11, 2005 9:18:03 AM

I got a cow toy this morning and it's stamped with the Nestle and Coffeemate logos. I also got a hand out advertising coffeemate. I can only assume coffeemate is launching a new flavor.

Posted by: Carys | May 11, 2005 9:34:21 AM

I wonder if the promoters are going to be in Bryant Park all day today. I would def hop down there and check it out if they were....

Also, what trains have these ads been on? I only saw the ad today on the back of AMNY. I wanna see what cute ads they have going on...What a very creative way to capture the curiosity of NYers!

Way to go Nestle!

Posted by: Lupe | May 11, 2005 10:45:19 AM

Tammy knows.

Posted by: ReeWright | May 11, 2005 12:06:21 PM

makes sense about nestle, either way I want one, they are so cute

Posted by: mimi | May 11, 2005 2:29:58 PM

wow, who at Nestle is so brilliant to come up with such a buzz and creative idea????

Posted by: praises | May 11, 2005 4:31:18 PM

Hey all. JUST LISTEN TO "MAYBE". i think she knows what she's talking about! i got a cow this morning too with nestle/coffeemate and half &half written on it. no flavors like hazelnut or vanilla on it tho. does that mean i dont get a chance to run for the $50,000? BoOo!! =(

Posted by: sad COW | May 11, 2005 6:05:26 PM

I must tell you what a great promotional idea you have with the miniature cow. I work in New York City and yesterday I was lucky to receive one on the street. I must tell you that everywhere I go I see this miniature cow, especially in the Deli's.

If you have a cow marked Hazel nut or vanilla, you need to be in Bryant park right now and look for something with the other cow, The first person to find their mate wins $50,000. Sadly, my cow says Coffee Mate and is no eligible. That sucks. Stood around drinking bad coffee for nothing, well did get to see some cows.

Posted by: | May 12, 2005 10:04:42 AM

Hi all, i just saw a GIANT cow in Bryan Park on my way to work this morning :) and 4 persons dressed just like cows (with "nipples" and all) very funny!

Posted by: apple | May 12, 2005 10:06:57 AM

Sorry, just have to correct Donna, as a Chicagoan in nyc -- the cows were in Chicago first, in 1999. I believe that was the original Cows on Parade. The following year, NYC did it.

Posted by: Amanda | May 12, 2005 10:49:01 AM

I'm in uptown NYC. Where can I get one of these cows (you know, exact location)? Is it too late?

Posted by: G | May 12, 2005 11:28:16 AM

Yeah, I remember the Cow Parade when it was here in NYC. I saw a lot of them. I also have the picture book about it.

Posted by: G | May 12, 2005 11:29:53 AM

Heading out for lunch in 10 minutes! 4 streets away from Bryant Park....are they still there? I want the cow!
