George W. Bush will not be going to Hell

Hell_pizza_2President Bush has never been to New Zealand, but if he goes, don’t expect him to grab a slice at Hell Pizza. The chain has made a habit of insulting the president in its ads. There’s the one shown here, which has been defaced. Then there’s an even more blunt execution, which carries the same photo along with the line, “Hell. Too good for some evil bastards.” The country’s ad-standards board is discussing this second ad today, to decide if it can stay up.

The cynic in me says that anyone that desperate in advertising must be covering up for some pretty sucky pizzas.

Actually, they're pretty damn good pizzas. Most people I know are a bit suprised that they've got away with the language, but are far from shocked by the sentiment.

If anything, it's a bit tame for a company that's built its brand on irreverence (remember the "accidental" juxtaposition of the pizza paddle in their billboard with the MADGE woman's backside?). Given that their target market is students and other young people (and the pictured billboard is among the tattoo parlours, anarchist bookshops and hair-braiders of upper Cuba St), I'd have thought that Dubya would have been a bit of a soft and obvious target.

Desperate? Finally someone within advertising-buiz or politics speaks the truth...
