Cleaning up ‘South Park’ for syndication

CartmanMort Marcus just might have the toughest job in television. For the past year, he’s been cleaning up episodes of South Park for its move into broadcast syndication, TV Guide reports. (The first syndicated run begins tonight.) Marcus has been running his edits through an extensive vetting system that includes Trey Parker and Matt Stone as well as a board that represents the broadcasters. So what is left after the “nip-tucking”? Mr. Hankey made the cut, as did Chef’s chocolate salty balls. But you won’t see visuals of Kenny’s shrinking hemorrhoid or hear the Lord’s name attached to any “-damned” expletives. “We’ve been careful that the show stays funny,” Marcus says. “At the end of the day, every single cut, no matter what we do, is run by Matt and Trey, so that creatively the program holds up. To tell you the truth, I wonder if anyone can even tell what’s been cut.”

Here in Colorado, South Park has been running a commercial to promote its syndication debut The commercial spoofs a popular advertising campaign for Frontier Airlines. In the South Park commercial, they put Cartman, Kenny, and the others on animated plane tails, and have them bust on each other - just like the animals do in Frontier's commercials. It's nice to see a TV show pay homage to an ad campaign, as oppsed to the other way around.

I'm pretty sure that the reruns we catch up here in Canada - on the Canadian version of the Comedy Channel, but still on the basic cable package - are unedited. I definitely remember a g*ddamn.

"To tell you the truth, I wonder if anyone can even tell what’s been cut.” That's a load of malarkey. Anyone who has watched the original would be able to tell.

Does anyone else find this utterly ridiculous? Trying to create a family-friendly South Park is like trying to create family-friendly porn. I'm sure loads of people want to sit down with their kids with a bowl of microwave popcorn and watch Olivia O'Lovely and Dicky McBiguns get it on.

im 15 years old im from minnesota and i love south park and if people are trying to edit the show i think thats bullshit because thats why me and my friends love south park so much they jus say what they want and if someone is trying to stop them i hope that they know that minnesota thinks that persons an ass hole

South Park is fine the way it is. A bunch of soccer moms and PTA moms probably made a big stink and want it cleaned. Well TELL LITTLE JUNIOR not to watch it! Your TV has parental control. USE IT! God I hate our society. But Matt and Trey probably want to expand. Good for them, but all I can say is that the two best shows on TV right now are South Park nad Family Guy. Hands down!! People are just stupid and nobody can change that unless you fix it with a bullet! - Doostain

Did any of you read the f'ing article??? No one is MAKING them clean up South Park! They are cleaning it up so that they can SYNDICATE it and run it on more program carriers like WB, FOX, NBC, etc... They are doing it TO MAKE MORE MONEY!!! No one is oppressing Parker and Stone, you idiots... they are doing it willingly so they can sell the re-runs to someone other than Comedy Central...
It's all about the money. RTFP.

MIS-take. I'll never watch it again.

What is America coming to? Are we all about the money, and less quality?

Of course being smarter than a bunch of dumbasses isn't saying much.

Posted by: OperativeBob | Sep 21, 2005 6:34:10 AM

You could be our leader, though. I can see it now, "Fighting Dreamer, Leader of the Dumbasses". What do you think?

Posted by: OperativeBob | Sep 21, 2005 6:37:44 AM

The episodes on Comedy Central won't be edited. If you don't like it, just don't watch it in syndication.

Way to go Doostain - you said it right.

As much as I hate to see a show such as this get snipped up - at least a lot of people who don't subscribe to cable television will get a chance to see the eps... even if they have been mutilated.

(the above comment should have been directed at "U'R all idiots" and not Doostain.

My bad.

I Love The Sout Park show and the movie...I Love everything about it I think Stan Marsh is cute,...

I think syndicating South Park isn't such a smart idea. Blowing it up and putting it on tons of other channels is just going to piss old people off, confuse the usual watchers, and make the show less popular altogether. I mean South Park's big enough that just about everyone that watches television knows what it is, where to find it, and what its about. Why push on people who don't want to watch it? Its just gonna piss 'em off. I'm sure they make plenty of money off they show already, with all the related products available used for advertising. (video games, t-shirts, dvd's, cereal boxes) Listening to all the blab's here, there are plenty of followers already, syndicating and spreading the show is just going to piss off the conservatives.

I saw those Frontier commerc ials which spoof Southpark. Thery were on The WB in Denver. Don't know how you can get a copy, but try calling the TV station.I assume ithat they only ran in Colorado.

im pissed off,it seems that SOME adults judge the show on the movie(Bigger, longer, uncut).my dads saw the movie and says that I cant watch south Park at all.they see a film with swear words in it,they start to swear, kenny goes to Hell,so what? the episodes aren't like the movie, episodes have beeps in them, fucking Hell, thats why they call it "Bigger,Longer,UNCUT".

Hey Connor. England hasn't kicked any ass for quite a few decades now. But don't worry. The U.S. will protect your sorry asses.
BTW, we use proper spelling because we're not ignorant.
