Nice lookin' but I don't get the music selection.
Posted by: Ben Popken | Nov 14, 2005 11:47:34 AM
i found the piece very interesting, it wasn't something i could fully understand the first time around. i think the music has something to deal with like it said "what side are you on" are you a watcher, outside the painting looking in, or a doer, the man in the painting not even looking out. but continuing through the door. now back to the piece, are you on the johnny walker side, or just somebody looking in. which side are you on?
or thats how i take it

*couldn't understand the first time around, sorry
Posted by: Richard Wong | Nov 14, 2005 8:20:55 PM
i think the music selection is a reflection of the animated characters choice to leave the piece of artwork representing War in favor of one that is decidedly more peaceful. Which side are you on?
Posted by: pk | Nov 15, 2005 11:06:25 AM
could anyone tell me what's the title and artist of the song on the johnnie walker "painting" spot?

Off course IS NOT from Billi Bragg!!! OMG!!!! @_@
Posted by: Freezing Shackle | Nov 30, 2005 9:54:52 AM
anyone found the singer for this particular song on the ad?
Posted by: | Dec 1, 2005 5:15:59 AM
I've been told that the song is Billy Brag's- of course he is not singing it this time, and that it is a rebel's song- but i do not know who is singing it on the ad!
Posted by: dimitra | Dec 4, 2005 6:21:25 AM
natalie merchant sings the song on the advert ... but the song is much more older and i am sure that the last post from dimitra is 100% corrent... by the way is there sire or other source that we can find and download the ad?

WHICH SIDE ARE YOU ON? (FLORENCE REECE)
I INSIST THIS IS THE SONG FROM THE AD..
ITS A VERY OLD SONG MID OF 30;S WITH A POLITICAL HISTORY
CHECK THE FOLLOWING ADDRESS
:http://www.geocities.com/Nashville/3448/whichsid.html
THE VERSION WITH NATALIE MERCHANT WILL INCLUDE IN A NEW COLLECTION ALBUM COMPILED BY MR.PAPASPYROPOULOS WHICH BE CALLED "ONCE UPON A TIME"
Posted by: ARETI | Dec 6, 2005 3:06:48 AM
the 2nd "which side.." version -from natalie merchant, for sure guys- that's being used in the advert is from her previous album "the house carpenter's daughter".
by the way, check out her new album...you won't be disappointed...
Posted by: tatiana | Dec 19, 2005 9:18:27 AM
I think tatiana is right...The version of the ad is N. Merchants's....Ofcourse composer is Florence Reece....:-)
Posted by: Mike | Dec 20, 2005 1:36:38 PM
the track is a contemporary interpretation of the 1930’s workers’ song "Which Side Are You On?" produced by A-Bomb, a soundtrack production company in London.

Guys,
You are all a little bit right.
Which side are you on is an old Union Song. The song is based on the tune of "Lay The Lily Down" by Jack Munro. That was way before 1930 when indeed Florence Reese picked it up and changed it into the known Union Song. There are old versions of her available on CD but it is awful. She doesn't have the voice to sing these kind of songs. The song was played a lot in the 40s and 50s by Woody Guthrie and Pete Seegers who were hanging out with Bob Dylan those days. The "Almanac Singers" featuring Guthrie and Seegers have the best version of "Which side are you from". It is not so sugar sweet as in the Johnny Walker ad, anyway it was meant to be a protest song. You can buy it from Amazon or download it from musicload.de. Search for Pete Seegers.
Regards from Athens
Mike

in the commercial wich singer is it?
None off the above is right...i have downloaded all off them :(
Posted by: adonis | Jan 7, 2006 9:02:51 PM
Well I am not sure, I believe dimitra above is right, it sounds pretty much like Natalie Merchant to me. But I wouldn't bet on it. It is definitely not Florence Reese. She sounds more like Anna Vissi with a very bad cold.
Strange that Johnny Walker does not have anything on their site. They have all other crap.

Γιατί ρε βλαχοαγγλάκια γράφεται με λατινικούς χαρακτήρες; Όσο για τον μουσικογνώστη ή αλλιώς μουσικοπαίχτη τάκα-τάκα Aganaktismenos, αφου ξέρει ποιος λέει το κομμάτι γιατί δεν το λέει και σε μας να το κατεβάσουμε;

From www.a-bomb.co.uk/flat.asp
"10/31/2005 / Johhnie Walker - 'Painting'
A-Bomb's stunning collaboration with BBH on this latest installment of the "Keep Walking" campaign has won Boards Magazine's Top Spot. Directed by Aardman, it shows the personal journey taken by one of Delacroix's warriors when he elects to snap his sword in half and leave the battlefield to journey through other famous masterpieces, including works by Hokusai, Seurat and Miro, to the doorway of Magritte’s "La Victoire". The richly evocative soundtrack, a contemporary interpretation of 1940’s workers' song "Which Side Are You On?", produced by A-Bomb and featuring vocalist Rachel Kelly, exquisitly underscores the film's intriguing subtext."
Artist: A-Bomb feat.Rachel Kelly
Song Title: Which Side Are You On?
