When will Apple ditch the name iTunes?

Itunes_logo_1Somewhere in the bowels of Apple’s Cupertino, Calif., headquarters, a debate is raging—or will be raging soon enough. It’s about the name iTunes. The phenomenally successful music player, and music store, is quickly outgrowing its name. You can use it to watch videos and TV shows, and movies are surely on the way. iTunes is about a lot more than tunes. And sooner or later, presumably, Apple will need to change the iTunes name. What will replace it?

It's hard for me to imagine they will change it anytime soon. The mindshare of the iTunes brand is just too strong to ditch it. It is kind of mislabeled now that the store has video content as well -- but they're just going to have to live with it, at least for a while.

maybe iStore, iEntertainment. I (no pun intended) think they won't rename it until they relauch the miniMac as an entertainment hub device.

I think they'll go with iPlay, since that's what it does- play media files. And I agree that they will change it, apple is not one to care for "mindshare" of a brand name. If they were, they wouldn't have renamed the wildly successful Powerbook line to the totally lame "Macbook".

Yeah MacBook really is a poor title. iTunes has definitely started to lose its identity, I think the iPlay suggestion is a good idea for a replacement.

How about "QuickTime"?
