Finally, a non-derivative ad from Apple

Marsalis_apple_adFor a while there, as you may recall, this blog was the official home of the Apple/Lugz controversy, and we also joined in on stirring the pot over Apple’s kerfuffle with Postal Service. However, in the interest of giving credit where credit is due, the new “iPod + iTunes” spot, featuring Wynton Marsalis, which aired on the Grammys last night, is way cool. Best of all, though it does a terrific job of evoking the Jazz Era, it doesn’t appear to be a ripoff of anything. Here’s a link to it. Enjoy.

This spot has no concept. The whole entire campaign is completely devoid of idea. Then again, people love it. Lee Clow approved it. What the hell do I know?

Execution in the hands of genius becomes content. Or something like that.

That said, I'll always prefer something with a great concept behind it.

Hey, idiot...this Ad was on Ad Critic three weeks ago. It didn't premier on the Grammy's. Get your shit straight. If you're gonna write an Ad Blog, know the industry.

With all due respect, as i wasn't sure when it broke, I was careful to say in this post that the ad simply "aired" on the Grammys, not that it "premiered" on the Grammys.

you missed this ad running non-stop during the x-games where it was often placed right next to a kemho tires ad which was milking the apple silhouette concept with the same blue colors.

and i'm bettin' $10 Gore works at Chiat

In my mind, the black and white silhouettes evoke some elements from the movie Sin City.

Ms. Taylor certainly doesn't need me or anyone else to defend her -- especially since she has already acquitted herself admirably. Still, common decency compels me to respond to the one known as Gore: Lighten up, dude. By calling her an idiot, all you do is reveal your own ignorance. You can disagree with someone without being disagreeable.

Impressive. Moral support from beyond the grave.

Too bad David Ogilvy is no longer with us, he seems like he IS a nice guy, but that Gore person is an idiot.

actually, the imagery in the spot appears to draw inspiration from african-american artists like jacob lawrence.

consider this your black history month trivia moment.
