No, we don't want to live in that world. And if Red Bull was going to change something couldn't they do something about the whole New York/New Jersey thing? Like calling it Gotham or something? The Kansas City Wizards future is in some doubt, too, as you know. When the franchise was first formed it was called The Kansas City Wiz. A problematic name. I knew the writer who worked on the first campaign for them. He actually presented them with the tagline: The Kansas City Wiz. You gotta go.
Glad to know you're a soccer guy, Tim.

That's great. I remember all the fun the sportswriters had when Kansas City would play Dallas in the early years - the Wiz vs. the Burn.

Tim:
Why do bloggers/soccer fans always preface a blog post about soccer with a line like "bear with me?" I do the same thing ... must be an inferiority complex or years of taking abuse.
On a side note, the MetroStars dropped the whole New York/New Jersey thing several years ago.
Red Bulls is lame, but you're not the only group of supporters struggling with names. We've been through hell here in Houston over the past month or so.

Yeah, I don't know why I pre-emptively apologize when I write about soccer. Old habit. So they've been called the NY MetroStars of late? I had no idea.

Sorry, I’m a soccer guy, bear with me. Even though soccer struggles to be accepted on a pro level in this country, this stunt potentially affects all leagues in all sports. Rename a stadium every few years once the rights expire? Ok, fine. I get that. But from a fan POV, intruding into the integrity of a sport by taking over a team’s identity is just plain wrong.

I didn't know the metros had any integrity to sell out. if red bull can actually turn the franchise around, which they helped do in austria, then great. winning will bring back those pouting hard-core fans (all twelve of them). what's more, beckenbauer is allegedly behind the move, and everything der kaiser touches turns to gold. at least Red Bull is better than being rebranded as the Mentos.

FYI, they were known as just Metrostars, not NY Metrostars or any other city signifier.

hey, what's up with the dc united remark!?!
from one soccer (football) fan to another... it is beyond assine and i can't believe that the league is letting them get away with it. that would not fly in mlb, nba, or nfl...
tim... you hit the nail on the head... i hope their fans make a fuss after this stupid announcement... why can't they leagues in other countries and just put red bull on their jerseys? that seems more appropriate and it is the acceptable practice in the sport.
and yes stop apologizing for being a soccer fan... for 95 per cent of the world, this is the number one sport!
