Toledo scared of mystery ‘Debunkify’ ads

Debunkify Maybe this extends beyond Toledo, but people there are scratching their heads and starting to feel an overwhelming sense of doom over a cryptic ad campaign that bears the one-word tagline, “Debunkify.” Apparently there are “Debunkify” billboards up around that Ohio town. We’ve also come across a “Debunkify” video on YouTube and a Web site, Debunkify.com, which has a clock that’s counting down—it looks like it’ll reach zero hour sometime on July 10. Can someone explain what’s happening here, so the people in Toledo can feel safe again? UPDATE: The site went live this morning, July 10, at 10 a.m. EDT. It is indeed an Ohio anti-smoking campaign.

I did a whois search and that website is owned by hyperquake.com.

Which appears to be a multimedia advertising agency in Ohio.

They apparently create a lot of online games for companies to use in promoting their business.

I'm willing to bet large sums of money that it's something along the lines of truth.com and their anti-tobacco campaigns. I don't know what the big surprise would be though.

It's obviously that anti-smoking group, standonline.com.

Everything they do is so tedious, and this ridiculous campaign has all the hallmarks of this group.

Oh, I forgot to mention these signs are all over Cincinnati and Dayton, not just Toledo.

Posted by: Lisa | Jun 22, 2006 9:12:35 PM

they're all over Columbus too. not sure what they're up to.

Posted by: ben | Jun 24, 2006 11:44:04 PM

I'm in Youngstown- half way between Cleveland and Pittsburg, PA. The ads are here too.. If you go to debunkify.com it has something to do with anti-smoking. The thing is, not just here in Ohio, but you can pull up facts from other states as well. Is this something that is nation wide? Weird ad campaign.

Posted by: Stace | Jun 25, 2006 10:37:22 PM

Yeah, they also have the buses in downtown dayton painted orange with the word on it.....peculiar.

Posted by: tyan | Jun 26, 2006 10:03:43 PM

I see an add all the time on TV and it plays "alien" sounds and uses a really weird voice to say "debunkify". I have always wanted to know what is means so I wrote it down to look it up and the only thing i could find is that "debunk" means to prove something wrong and "debunkify" is the act of doing it. I find the whole 1 word "debunkify" comercial a little weird myself.

Posted by: Christina | Jun 27, 2006 3:03:24 PM

I live in grafton, OH and taht commercial is here also. weird...

Posted by: Rosa | Jun 28, 2006 2:11:42 AM

How do you think we feel? We're a rock band in Cincinnati called THE MYTHS...Wonder if we will start getting threats.

Posted by: S | Jun 28, 2006 11:52:12 AM

Yeah we have these signs in Meigs County Ohio as well, it's the southeastern part of Ohio. Quite interesting if I do say so myself.

Posted by: Josh Hayman | Jun 29, 2006 5:06:26 PM

there around dayton also!

Posted by: courtney | Jun 29, 2006 10:19:49 PM

Also in Zanesville, Oh. Billboards and TV.Whoever they are, they're getting alot of free publicity. Just look at what WE are writing about!!!

Posted by: Erly | Jun 30, 2006 12:34:24 AM

Don't you all think this is exactly what they want us to do??? Appearantly it has to do with not smoking. I have not seen any billboards around my Ohio town, but of course have seen the commercials and abviously I did a web search on ( thats how I found this). I am sure we will find out in time. I only fear that all the hype will lead to little or nothing exciting.

Posted by: teese | Jun 30, 2006 9:10:18 AM

this is so gay.. get over it people its just some crap

Posted by: me | Jun 30, 2006 7:47:00 PM

the stickers are all over the Main Street of Fostoria.....yeah im pretty sure there can't be nothing too exciting about this tho its probably just another stupid ad to make you think

Posted by: cassie | Jun 30, 2006 9:15:57 PM

I'm in Mineral Ridge, OH (outside of Youngstown)...they are here too...I have been curious to see what it was!

Posted by: Tonya | Jun 30, 2006 11:44:42 PM

It's in Muskingham, and Coshocton county also and it says kill the myths before they kill you. I don't understand, however I am guessing it has something to do with tree huggers/

Posted by: Rich | Jul 1, 2006 8:20:22 PM

i think its cool. If whoever is doing this went through all this trouble then there must be a good suprize at the end..im excited for the countdown to be over!

Posted by: kelz | Jul 3, 2006 11:55:27 PM

Ya, I live near Youngstown and I've seen the ads. This is only my opinion but from what I've looked at I think it probablly has to do with Ohio going smoke free.I think the countdown is probablly when they ban public smoking. It definately has to do with not smoking!!!

Posted by: Tee | Jul 4, 2006 10:52:18 PM

The ads are everywhere in Columbus. I even find them sponsoring games and stuff on the internet. It seams like other people around the nation are getting it, but how are only Ohioans targeted?

Posted by: Aaron | Jul 5, 2006 11:51:12 AM

ya im from cleveland and they are all around. I hope you're right Tee. I hope ohio goes smoke-free!

Posted by: kelz | Jul 5, 2006 1:25:19 PM

the debunkify sign is in the walmart plaza in mason. wv

Posted by: cc | Jul 5, 2006 4:03:00 PM

We've got a sign in Warren, Ohio on North River Road, (about 30 minutes NW of Youngstown), Does anyone know if these signs are just located in small towns, suburbs, or big cities? Or maybe just everywhere?

Posted by: Becca | Jul 5, 2006 5:23:41 PM

The signs are in Barberton, Oh as well. It would be nice to get a bit more info but I can't find anything. We all have to wait.

Posted by: Jenn | Jul 5, 2006 10:01:35 PM

I think it's really wierd!!!!! I think it's about quitting smoking but I'm not sure, I used to smoke for 35 years quit 3 weeks ago it was the first time I ever tried to quit and I sure miss it!!!!!! Leave smokers alone!!!!

Posted by: Colleen | Jul 5, 2006 10:34:17 PM

i think it is ttly frieky its in cinci

Posted by: lola | Jul 5, 2006 11:38:37 PM

I suspect the "myth" they're referring to is the myth that secondhand smoke is harmless. Looks more and more like an anti-smoking promo.

Posted by: Bobcat | Jul 6, 2006 10:51:24 AM

i think it totally b.s. that if its about not smoking. because if i want to light up a cig. i will do it. i beleive that every body has the right to do what they want to. i also think that the goverment should stay out of my biz.

Posted by: david | Jul 6, 2006 12:39:53 PM

Ooohhh spooky.... but if it is anti-smoking...way to go... your right to smoke ends at my right to breathe fresh air... keep your smoke to yourself.

Posted by: francy | Jul 6, 2006 2:51:43 PM

i hope it is big. i hate smokers.

Posted by: mh | Jul 6, 2006 4:53:14 PM

And they hate you too. No one says you have to be near them. How about letting bars decide if they want to be smoky or not? If you want to NOT be around smoke, don't go to a smoking-allowed bar.

Or, hey, do you want to just ban all smoking everywhere, even in private?

How about banning SUVs, coffee, and rap music too? They're more annoying to me.

And I don'tsmoke, ass.

Posted by: Pickles | Jul 6, 2006 11:31:30 PM

the debunkify ads are in Huber Heights and in small towns as germantown on route 4 and moraine.

Posted by: specz | Jul 7, 2006 3:49:50 PM

hahah it would suck to be the band "THE MYTHS"... its a subliminal message!...they made it cause they really dont like rock music in ohio! damn!!...now they want us to kill them....!

The Debunkify tour van recently stopped in Marietta to help educate local youth to the dangers of smoking, and is receiving some very positive reactions.

The van is geared toward entertainment as well as education. For example, the van features a PlayStation 2 hooked up to a large screen.

“I thought it was awesome,” said Andrew Thompson, 17, who attends Marietta Christian School. “The PS2 was great.”

“I liked how they were able to get their message across while also making it fun,” said Ted Howell, 15, who also attends Marietta Christian School.

Peer pressure is a big influence, and youth are constantly surrounded by smokers.

“I know a lot of people who smoke from school,” said Courtney Blair, 14, who attends Marietta Middle School.

Youth tend to be susceptible to smoking based on peer pressure, some experts say, and smoking is far more dangerous for young people than for adults.

Young people are encouraged to become involved in stand, an Ohio anti-smoking organization that is dedicated to demonstrating the effects of tobacco abuse. Since Oct. 30, 2006, stand has sponsored the 10-month Debunkify tour.

"Basically, the purpose of Debunkify is to just give people some more information about the dangers of smoking,” said Mannie Reed, spokesperson for Debunkify.

Reed, with Todd Marquis, crew the Debunkify van, which will continue traveling across Ohio until June, visiting over 50 cities.

“We may still tour after Debunkify finishes, but it won’t be in this same format,” said Reed.

Youth can become involved in stand by visiting the stand or Debunkify Web sites, or by visiting one of the tour stops. Each local stand team is unique, and their purpose is to serve the interests of youth.

Debunkify is aimed at youth and young adults aged 12 to 24. Visitors may share thoughts and opinions on smoking issues through Sound Off, a private booth. Every testimonial is taped and some will be featured on debunkify.com.

There are several ways that Reed and Marquis are able to interact with youth, like SmokeScreen, a series of tests that assess a person’s risk of tobacco addiction.

Additionally, all visitors to the van will receive standTunz cards, which allow the cardholder to download free music from popular Ohio artists. All of the artists are tobacco-free.

Debunkify, which stops next weekend in Cleveland, was obviously a hit.

“I thought it was really good,” said Mathais Brown, 14, of Marietta Christian School.

Debunkify and STAND....
I am old enough to know people who survived Germany during WWII, These organizations are not pretty and are youth indoctrination programs, not unlike what happened in Germany back then. Be very afraid!

If they want to indoctrinate the youth with something actually useful, getting good grades might be a start.
These programs take kids out of their classes and waste their time. I have a friend in vocational ed who said an entire school day was wasted with this nonsense in a school concerning a prom fund raiser.

im just in ohio visiting but those commercials are getting on my last damn nerves leave smokers alone shit there's worst shit going on in the world lets protest the war or fight to cure aids. shit man if smoking makes someone feel better why try to make them feel like shit they already knew it was no good most likely before they even started smoking.

Posted by: sherri | Aug 1, 2007 10:23:43 PM

there is nothing scary about educating children and young adults about the deadly affects of second-hand smoke and tobacco usage- Let's face it, there are plenty of studies out there that clearly prove smoking causes cancer, heart disease, and the list goes on and on..why not take a stand and work for something as easy as saying hey: Don't smoke, its additive, deadly, and kills - Heck the costs to Ohio alone for Tobacco related illnesses is in the billions- I think I can put up with the advertising- for whateever it is...

TO DAVID JULY 6TH
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS "FRESH AIR".
YOU'VE BEEN BREATHING IN POLLUTION SINCE BIRTH. EVERY ACTIVITY YOU CAN IMAGINE INSERTS AN AIRBORNE PARTICLE THAT FINDS IT'S WAY TO YOUR LUNGS. LIVE IN A BUBBLE IF YOU CARE TO REMOVE THE FEAR.
