I don't know who's behind it but clearly, it's not a spurned wife.

From the Gawker comments...
http://thatgirlemily.blogspot.com/
The only thing I learned from reading it is that I should just be thankful no client's asked me to write 52,000 words of fake blogging. Brain....hurts....
Posted by: CorruptedJournalist | Jul 17, 2006 5:33:56 PM
Amazingly, all of this happened in the span of like 17 days -- imagine if all bloggers had that level of "real" drama in a bit over 1/2 a month, the world might come to an end!
Is there a word for an advertising technique that is trying to be so cutting-edge and guerrila that it ends up coming off as cliche?
Posted by: Ben | Jul 17, 2006 5:38:18 PM
Does anyone really use a PI, especially when they're not already convinced about an affair? That's so Hollywood it doesn't even happen in movies anymore.
Posted by: CorruptedJournalist | Jul 17, 2006 6:01:43 PM
If this is guerilla marketing, it'll be interesting to find out what client approved these phrases:
"whoring, cheating, adulterous, fornicating husband"
"all of those nut-sacks who betray their family"
"after you came prematurely"
"that ho-bag once called my best friend, Laura"
"After tomorrow, husbands will be rubbing one out in the shower"
"Steven and Laura have been doing a lot of fucking lately"
"has been putting his small, little tool into another woman’s toolbox"
Etc, etc.

fuck, ill have to take a look at this when i get home, i live around the corner.
cant believe i missed it.

Another point to the "can't possibly be a real person" side:
How many of you can orchestrate the creation and posting of a large-scale billboard in three days? not to mention it being a Friday afternoon through Monday morning span.
I mean, I would like to think I would have that much clout that I could arrainge it, even with a minor design with just type -- however, I just don't think it would happen, even with "connections". :)
(I am sure I am wrong though, and some of you have flipped a project even quicker. *envy*)
Posted by: Ben | Jul 17, 2006 8:19:30 PM
It's an ad for City Outdoor advertising, is my guess. There'll be some message about "getting your message out" revealed in a few weeks.

Check it out - the same billboard is on Sunset in CA. Definitely fishy since Emily doesn't mention that one in her blog. My guess is definitely on WaMu. It's right near this one.
Posted by: Elizabeth | Jul 18, 2006 10:16:34 AM
Beyond a tie in with some sort of security upgrade for checking accounts -- what does WaMu gain from the lack-of-family appeal presented in the blog and on the billboards?
Word of mouth perhaps, but this would be a very, very interesting form of taking your brand beyond its boundries.
Posted by: Ben | Jul 18, 2006 11:29:55 AM
That's a good point about family appeal. Maybe they're trying to appear more edgy? I was just referring the font, etc. But you have dashed my theory!
Another point: There is just no way that she (according to her "blog") got a billboard up in 3 days. My coworker handles that stuff and it takes her a month - with printing!
Posted by: Elizabeth | Jul 18, 2006 3:33:06 PM
Obviously your coworker doesn't have the right "connections." That Emily's a resourceful lass.
Posted by: CorruptedJournalist | Jul 18, 2006 3:37:56 PM
No way this is WaMu. My money is on some new HBO show, in the "Sex in the City" vein.
NY and LA? They're going for the big media markets. Think entertainment.
Posted by: Swamp Rat | Jul 18, 2006 6:08:17 PM
I kept thinking something for a show as well... maybe something about a woman who finds out her husband is cheating and decides to start a private detective agency doing the same for other women.
But this clearly is guerilla marketing, not genuine.

Word on the street is that it's for Court TV - for a new PI show or something. This girl must have serious connections it it's real. Check out the new video on her blog - does it look real?
Posted by: | Jul 19, 2006 10:47:22 AM
It's now in Chicago.
http://troublespots.blogspot.com/2006/07/sign-language.html
DEFINTELY a viral campaign.
Posted by: | Jul 19, 2006 10:50:30 AM
No way is that video real. Bad acting all around, especially on "Steven's" part with giant hand gestures. Dumb way to introduce a show.

There is a cheating husband with best friend episode for Parco PI - Court TV.
Posted by: shane | Jul 20, 2006 5:04:59 PM
Confirmed by Court TV. Article in the NY Post: http://www.nypost.com/entertainment/viral__but_not_infectious_entertainment_mandy_stadtmiller.htm

The hotel (Riverview) they are seen going into in the video is a NYC flophouse. It is used as an SRO for homeless people and the rooms are frequented by prostitutes and junkies. It is the location of a very nice theatre, ironically enough.
A guy like Steven with secret credit cards is not taking the girlfriend to a place where rooms are booked by the hour with community bathrooms. Not when the psycho wife is whining about all the hotels and restaurants he never took her to.
Fake fake fake! If it were real, her behavior toward the Pilates newbie would make me say "good for you, Steve, I would cheat on, then leave a psycho child too..."

ITS A CALVIN KLEIN AD - my guess...
Posted by: e | Jul 21, 2006 12:48:48 PM
It must be a fake!
There is the same billboard on Sunset Blvd in west hollywood...
its weird though if it were an advertisement... why wouldnt there be at least one marking for the company that is advertising this...

I just saw the same billboard driving home on the BQE in Brooklyn. Now I'm pissed that I know it wasn't real. THANKS A LOT, INTERNET!
Posted by: Michael | Jul 24, 2006 6:27:13 PM
Its fake this is an advertisment for a Technology company. New wave of advertising. This is how they sell it/ the blog factor.
