Haven't seen those two movies either, but go see Galaxy Quest, he's in there too and it's a wonderful good movie.

-He’s fast becoming the Dinero of geek movies. Kickball. Galaxy Quest. Now a new one about him starting a technical college called Approved. (Lewis Black is in it so I might see it just for him.)
-My daughter met him in her high-school drama class.

Actually I have a 4-year-old iMac and a 6-week-old MacBook, and I've been really pleased with both. I just find it amusing when the almighty Apple advertising juggernaut stumbles a bit.

those hp ads are fucking awesome, you mentioned it once. you hate the mac ads, but can't stop talking about them.

it's the first mac ads in like 5 years, did it stumble from the previous executions or the ones with King Kong Bundy?

Apple's always had a certain arrogance about it. They've been able to make the choice of Mac over PC seem almost like a moral decision. Individualism over Big Brother. Truth over lies. You see it explicitly in "1984," and you feel it in something like "Switchers," even though that's more about product benefits. But they usually execute the message skillfully enough that they don't come across as arrogant, and that makes the advertising palatable. The Switchers from a few years ago, maybe thanks to Errol Morris, came across as playful, fun-loving, more bemused with PCs than anything (even when their PC lost their paper). I think that lightness of touch was part of why they were successful. These new ads try to be playful, but I think the guy who plays the Mac comes across as arrogant. And I think that's a mistake that Apple didn't intend. And yeah, I think casting is a big part of it. As for why I keep talking about it, I found a few funny videos and thought I'd post them. I certain don't "hate" Apple.

but, how do we say the switchers campaign was successful if they're making the same statement now that they were then (ie, in simplicity "macs are better")?
if it was successful, why do they need to send the same message?
but yeah, they should've hired a nobody before hiring someone with a shitty resume.

I guess the "success" of Switchers was pretty limited. I think Apple's market share went up (if only slightly), but it's still paltry, so the core goal is the same - getting people to switch. Today, though, I think Apple has more arguments for why it's a good idea. With something like Boot Camp, you can run Windows on the PC. And the success of the iPod no doubt has more people thinking that an Apple computer might not be a bad thing after all.

Sorry Tim.
For some reason those ads offend you, but most people- in and out of the business- seem to really like them.
If the idea was to make Apple more palatable to a PC user who saw them as some cult brand, then they actually did a good job of it.
Whatever "cool factor" PCs ever had seems to be fading daily, HP's campaign notwithstanding (the problem is that HP has no "ThinkPad" - no easily identifiable machine that competes with the Mac - sort of like American automakers).
You're correct in that the current campaign will annoy die-hard PC fans, but that doesn't seem to be target they're going after. They're looking for the casual PC user, the one who can be easily convinced.
