FIFA unveils the World Cup 2010 logo

Wclogo World Cup 2006 is over, and Italians everywhere are very hung over. Everyone else is bitter and looking to World Cup 2010 in South Africa. As it happens, the logo for the 2010 tournament was unveiled a couple of days ago, and here it is. It uses the colors of the South African flag to create the shape of Africa, and shows a footballer executing a bicycle kick (a move that’s often dangerous and whistled for a foul, but never mind). Reactions, of course, have been mixed: “I am not an artist, and as a non-artist, something either appeals to me or it doesn’t. And this doesn’t.” “We haven’t seen what other options there were, but I think they chose the right one.” “[It looks like] a frog jumping over a pork chop.” I think it’s better than Germany’s WC 2006 logo. What do you think?

Everything is better than the German logo.

I'd say it's a neck-and-neck-race.

Is FIFA going back to the old ball in 2010? Or is that a skull that's being kicked?

Ugh

What about a head-butt

It'd take me like 2 minutes to make a logo better than this. Using Microsoft Word's drawing software.

I like it, but like the Germany logo it's got WAY too much going on and the pieces aren't connected. There had to have been a way to meld the round logo and the Fifa World Cup text into the South Africa 2010 part of the logo...

How come there are two balls? Are the South African's going to put two balls into play every game? Maybe that would make the pathetic sport of soccer more palatable to watch. Nah, I doubt that would do it.

i don't like it. Everything is so damn oldschool in this logo. It looks like a logo of a worth theme-park in italy or the graphic from a shirt you buy in a tourist-shop on the beach! The German logo is much better. It's clearer and more design. It does not play with "what's typical for germany" -effects.

Wuhaaaa

big nay.

Looks like some talented 'graphic designer' just learned Illustrator. Whew, we can thank computers that we no longer have to make anything even remotely artistic anymore.

maybe it's depicting one of the black players slipping on a banana thrown onto the field by racist fans. if the cup is coming to south africa, at least it gives officials 4 years to bulk up security for the inevitable ugliness.

I like it--personally don't believe any of the rest of you could really do a better job, but I suppose you could say anything you want online...

Posted by: Jesse | Jul 13, 2006 2:31:22 AM

Well at least they used the “right” colors. I agree with you Tim, it’s much better than Germany’s WC 2006 logo!

Posted by: jen bennett | Jul 17, 2006 2:09:24 PM

significantly better than the 2006 logo, but it's still pretty bad.

HighJive : "maybe it's depicting one of the black players slipping on a banana thrown onto the field by racist fans." .... I'm sorry if you didn'nt mean it to sound so, but you sound racist yourself ...it's cause of primitive idiots like you that people still think less of other races... I'd encourage all of you to read about the concept behind the logo ...I don't think it's the best thing since sliced bread ..but I't better than Germany 2006 which looks like a Juvenile graphitti tag on a wall..personally it's the best FIFA World Cup logo till now...

As a BA fine art student from Stellenbosch, I am a bit shocked to see such a poor logo, big???. And sure as hell our designers could of put a much more compelling logo and icon to be shown off to the rest of the world. SO why was such a cliché logo used someone please answer me that?

Posted by: Jeff Mosetic | Jul 26, 2006 2:12:28 PM

I think it's good and it represents Africa and yes it has a black player coz this is Africa and the colours used are the colours for our rainbow flag representing our nation in colour so stop criticising it coz u wouldn't have done a better job okay!!

Check out http://www.notthe2010logo.co.za/
A website that aims to question the 2010 logo process and the quality of the logo. After all the 4 guys who decided the final logo had no idea what to look for. You had 3 managers and a lawyer choosing - I mean WTF!!

This is in no way “better” than the 2006 logo. It's dated and much more unclear. It's only 2007, what'll you think when the games come around in 2010? This was cool in the 90’s on a De La Soul or Tribe Called Quest CD/LP. I have to say, it's interesting to see people's view on “taste” or lack thereof?

Stop being hippocrates about this logo and stop comparing it with the German one. At least our guys have tallent. Did you see the london 2012 Olympic logo. Now that's a waste of tax payers money.
