Film at 11! NBC says shock ads work!

Antismoking_ad In a segment that was heavily promoted over the last few days, NBC Nightly News last night did a report on the new wave of shock-vertising (there's no direct URL—look for the headline, "Advertisers: Out to Shock You"). It featured some fan favorites, such as the new "car crash" Volkswagen ads from Crispin, Porter + Bogusky, the New York State antismoking commercial featuring the guy with the tracheotomy (pictured here), and the print ad we saw for the first time a couple of days ago instructing parents how to write an obituary for their teenager who dies from sniffing. The talking heads selected for the piece are former Young & Rubicam exec Tim Pollak and The One Club’s Kevin Swanepoel. Despite the gruesome footage, the piece had what might be termed a happy ending: everyone involved decided the ads work.

Isn't that NY anti-smoking spot a direct rip-off of the one done a few years ago at (now defunct) Houston Effler in Boston? Mark Nardi wrote it.

Maybe this isn't worth much since I'm already a non-smoker, but I HATE that ad with the guy with the hole in his throat. Not a whole lot grosses me out, but he definitely hit the nail. To the point that I just change the channel. Advertising may work, but you have to get me to watch it first.
