So the logo created for the upcoming World Cup has its problems, but redesigning another one because you don't like it - what a waste of time! On that note I will waste my time critiquing it. Although I can appreciate the combination of the ball and leopard, the type treatment looks thrown together and very static. All the attention was on the mark and nothing for the typography. At least the other one (like it or not) has some energy. This one gives me the feeling the leopard is taking a nap after devouring some helpless gazelle.

I'm no animal expert, but I'm almost positive that the spots depicted in the logo or of a jaguar--NOT a leopard. (They're pretty distinct.) And last I heard, there weren't any jaguars in South Africa.

also, i don't think FIFA's major sponsors (adidas, cough) would be happy to have the logo built around the outdated soccer ball design of petagons and hexagons.

Adidas needs to see some new soccer balls ... not have people kicking around the old ones.

Not crazy about the official WC 2010 logo, either, but it does have elements of African cultural art in the player figure, which I like. Still, I think it could be more energetic. As far as the alternate goes, it is a bit static, and the colors are a bit uninspiring for the world's greatest sporting event.
Regarding ball design, the pentagon/hexagon pattern is universally recognized as the standard soccer ball design. While the Adidas Teamgeist ball is ambitious in design and construction, it'll take a while before it catches on. Maybe a long while, considering the harsh criticism the design has received from players and fans alike, likening the panels to that of a feminine hygiene product.

The best sport in the World is Football, played for more than a 100 years. Designs are designs, I care more about the game.
