A familiar face in old Heinz ketchup spot

I remember seeing this Heinz ketchup ad when it came out in the 1980s. You might recognize the actor. The ad won a gold Lion at Cannes in 1987.

Nice. What's funny is I immediately remembered two things about that ad:
1. How he slides down the bannister like a goon.
2. How I could never figure out the physics of the bottle pouring evenly across the hot dog. I mean, maybe he's moving his hand to catch it, but then wouldn't it just pour all over the sidewalk? Why doesn't he just get a big glob and then nothing?

Come on...you know you thought about it, too.

I like the not-so-underlying suggestion that guys this cool are going to score with hooped earring chicks. "Watch me get ketchup from the sky, baby." Was she wearing leg-warmers?

And did he straddle that bannister?

Perhaps Heinz was attempting to dispell the poor perception of ketchup on hot dogs, carried over from the 70s.

In one of the Dirty Harry movies, Harry (as played by the King of Cool, Clint Eastwood) and his partner investigate a murder scene. Harry and the partner are eating hot dogs. They look over the bloody scene of a guy who's just been gunned down. Harry says, "That is absolutely SICKENING". His partner replies, "Yeah, the guy was in the prime of his life, and now look at him". Harry says with utter disgust, "No, not him. You just put ketchup on a hot dog!"

I remember when I was a kid I thought this commercial was cool (it ran endlessly on MTV). Now I see it and can't think of it making it past the shortlist at any award show. It's like those hokey commercials in the portfolios of old creative guys that when you see it you think "and this guy is my boss?".

I couldn't put my finger on why this seemed especially familiar until now. Slap a "freshmaker" tag and a thumb's up on that bad boy, and you've got an ad that's fresh and full of life.
