For those who just can’t get enough Ty

Ty Ever find yourself sitting at your desk and wishing to God you could hear the sound of Ty Montague’s voice? Well, now you can, thanks to the Ty Montague Soundboard. (The link no longer works, unfortunately.) Someone appears to have recorded the JWT creative director in action and posted a bunch of sound files to the Web. We like the “Drugs everywhere” and “You could be homeless” bits in particular. “I can’t work with you” is good, too. And the laugh. A note at the bottom urges people to record their own conversations with Ty and e-mail them in. We’ll leave the ethics of that up to you. Link via YesButNoButYes. UPDATE: YBNBY said a guy named Matt McDonald at JWT was involved, but he tells us he wasn’t. UPDATE2: Sadly, this site has now been taken down.

He's no more fatuous or self absorbed than any of the rest of you, just one guy with a huge ship to turn around. His best line, not on the site, is when you are filled with doubt, tell yourself, "It was a huge success and I did it all myself" -- as a non-specific mantra. Try it, it works.

Judy, until a couple of months ago, I too worked for Ty Montague, and after many years working at big agencies in NY, I thought he was most intelligent and imaginative Creative Director I ever worked with.

I think everyone is really mean and unfair. Ty Montague is talented and a great leader. He has been given a big ship to turn around and is not running around trying to bad mouth other people. He's trying to create great work and a place that people and clients want to be associated with.

Get back to your own jobs and stop the high school bs. Try MAKING something creative youself and stop knocking on people you are intimidated by or envy.

TY Montague ROCKS.

Linus Van Pelt always makes these cracks about Ty on this site - he did it extensively on the last story about the Fast Company article. I think it's maybe someone who Ty once fired, or didn't hire. Perhaps he should be man enough to come out from behind his pseudonym if he believes in what he says.

Until someone answers my question, i will not stop posing it. But nobody can seem to tell me what work this man is associated with. What did he do at BBH? What did he do at Wieden? And don't gimme that beta 7 or whatever it was. nobody beyond a few interactive cognoscenti have a clue what that was. so all you ty fans out there, step up and tell me: what work is ty montague famous for? what is he all about?

ty worked on the launch of axe at bbh. beta seven won the grand clio. he did a lot of the espn work. he isn't famous for his comments on adfreak. what have you done to make yourself famous linus?

For what it's worth, I don't know Ty at all. But name me one CD worth anything who doesn't have an ego. Why that matters I don’t know.

I will say I did have occasion to concept with a few of the people under him that he brought in. And they were some talented motherfuckers that are in CA and everywhere else creatives live, beta-7 people included.

They admitted things needed to change for the better and they were trying to do just that. You get that way because ego or no ego, there's someone watching your back and allowing you to do what you do.

Isn’t that part of what a CD does? Bring in talented people to make things better?

Just to set the record straight, I was disparaging neither Mr. Montague's talent nor his accomplishments -- both of which appear to be considerable -- in my initial post.

I simply noted that, in those audio snippets as well as the "Fast Company" article cited earlier, he comes across as a pompous, fatuous tool. I don't know whether he actually is or isn't, which is why I saw fit to ask the question in the first place.

That's the curious thing about advertising. Even insanely smart, talented people like Ty sound like total lamewads when they parrot platitudes and spout jargon. For an industry that supposedly values the fresh and the unconventional, it's odd that so many of its foremost practitioners tend to lapse into tired ad speak.

Of course, I'm hardly immune myself. But then, I suck.

Why is it considered an attack to ask what Ty Montague is all about? People seem to get awfully defensive about having to answer that. And just so you know, he was not involved in the Axe launch at BBH and shouldn't be taking credit for it. As for Wieden NY, working on the 1,497th ESPN ad does not a portfolio make. So I guess I have my answer to what work is Ty Montague known for? Not much. Doesn't mean he's a bad person, just not justifiable as a "name" creative in the ad industry. As for ego, there's nothing wrong with having one if you have a body of work and accomplishment to justify it.

And now doing the impossible - attracting talented people to work at a shop that people thought was creatively dead. And starting to do some good work. jet Blue is interesting, the Sunsilk 2 minute sitcoms are cool as is the print, there's some interesting stuff on diamonds and even a decent ad or two on clients like Halls.

Not a bad record.

And what Ty's famous for.

The reason your question is being interpreted as an attack is because it is. And we're not all dumb. We can read between the lines. So give up the act.

Find an ad critic password and look up the guy's name.

Open some award show books.

Use google. You know, the search engine (I would also accept, "google him").

If you really wanted to know what he's done, you would have done any of these things.

If you wanted to try and make a misguided point, you'd post that question repeatedly on adweek comment boards.

I've never worked with or for the guy, but he has a ton of really good work. And surprise, I didn't find that out by asking "what has he done?" over and over again.

Go ahead and dismiss work like beta7 and ESPN (come one, he did shelfball...frickin' shelfball). How about we ignore the Nike work, too.

Hey, Dan Wieden. What has he done? Nike. Whatever, that's just nike. What else has he done?

Bob Barrie? I mean beyond SI, Time, and United...what has he done?

Wow, you're right, when you ignore all the work someone's done, it looks like they haven't done anything.

who gives a rat's ass? actually not enough when you stop to think about it. nor has his sidekick (co-president) rosemarie ryan, for that matter. which apparantly is the reason this storied agency is about to shitsack the million dollar salary he doesn't earn....rumor has it his contract hasn't been renewed and he's month-to-month. the agency is in a dour mood and as for morale, you'd see better spirits in clutch of chickens at a slughter house. so, u still wanna know what's he's done...check back in six months. there's bound to be plenty for discussion
