VW puts the ego in ‘ego trip’

Egoemissionsindex_2 OK, gang, this one looks like it's from Crispin, so start your engines. The brochure at right is a guide called the “Ego Emissions Index,” which was inserted in this week's New Yorker. (Sorry for the poor photo quality, but, hey, I'm a blogger, not a photographer!) Anyway, as you might be able to tell from the photo, blinging out your teeth carries a stratospheric Ego Emissions rating of 98. To continue with the theme, baldness rates a 3, Roman ruins a 57, and so forth. The brochure also includes stickers (which from a graphical perspective mimic auto-emissions ratings stickers) so you can dole out ego emissions standards of your own. There's a also a companion Web site at egoindex.com. Now what does all of this have to do with VW? Excellent question. Here's the explanation I found in the brochure: “Now, as you begin to use the Ego Emissions Index, you'll notice that while most things come in somewhere between 20 and 80, other things, such as the Volkswagen Passat, come in much lower—around 5 or so.” And here's another question: Is this campaign a little touch of Subservient Chicken genius or a belabored attempt at creating buzz?

it's playing off the tv spot where dirvers of other vehicles are shown as begin very smug. when the couple driving the passat is shown, the super reads "lowest ego emissions"... or something to that effect.

Yeah, it's in Rolling Stone, too. I'd say this one was a definite "miss" for CPB, I want the 30 seconds back I wasted flipping through it...

Engaging? Yes. Different? Sure. Does it make me want to buy a Passat? Not really. And anyway, if CP+B is trying to create personalities for each of the VW cars, then this makes Passat either a wimp or a paradox (how can you brag about having no ego?)

Unlike the mini pull outs, I don't think this campaign is really true to the product.

How does the Passat have less ego emissions than the Toyota's, Hondas, Fords and Chevy's of the world? Oh yeah, it doesn't.

I, for one, like the insert. I just find it ironic that a bunch of overpaid advertising fat cats would have you believe that driving anything other than a Passat makes you a shamelessly egotistical exhibitionist.

What sort of cars do you suppose they drive? Something tells me they ain't Passats.

Gee, wonder what Crispin's Ego Emissions would be.

I wonder how Mini Cooper feels about Crispin continuing their ad campaign for another brand? The new VW campaign looks and feels exactly like the old Mini Cooper campaign. It's all about quirky Mini books and non-traditional inserts. But then, isn't that most of Crispin's work? Also, isn't this whole VW parody campaign built off of a pun? I'm not too into that. I did like the Rabbit TV spot that Crispin did for VW - that was well done.

In last week's New Yorker there was an interesting ad that treated mini coopers as prescription medicine.

It was only after I'd seen the ad a few times that I realized it was for the VW Bug instead.

I liked the ego emissions commercial the first time I saw it a while back - it caught me off guard which was kind of nice, since most TV commercials don't seem to do that anymore. But then after that I thought it getting overdone, uninspiring and generally no longer clever.

I miss the days of the Jetta ads with cool new music & mystique that just made me want to be part of that clique. Circa star gazing ad from a couple years ago.

Wait...didn't those ads push the VW ego? [Though a cool, trendy, sushi-eating ego.] I'm confuzzed.

An advertising fat cat is slang for well-paid, upper echelon types with cushy offices and titles longer than your arm. The term "fat cat" is a trifle dated, perhaps, but still understandable by even the minimally literate.

The year is 2006 AD.

Ugh, I spent so much time with this thing when it fell out of Rolling Stone, and it was so disappointing. Can't imagine the cash VW spent on this thing. And is the Passat all that low on the ego scale anyways?

Also, I had it on my desk and someone assumed I was considering getting a blinged-out grill, which was fairly embarrassing.
