Can this spot please fall into the Gap?
Why do I find this new spot from the Gap so cringe-inducing? Ahh. Could it be that it features a Funny Face-era Audrey Hepburn dancing to AC/DC’s “Back in Black”? The new commercial, which landed in my e-mail box over night, is meant to relaunch Gap’s skinny black pant, according to creative director Trey Laird, who talks about the ad in this video on the Gap site. While I get the point, there’s something so discordant about Angus Young teamed with Audrey Hepburn that I hope I never see this commercial again. —Posted by Catharine P. Taylor |

I couldn't believe how off the mark, discordant and dreadful this ad is - more like a freak show than an ad - I hope they drop it really quickly. So sad from the days when the GAP ads were kewl (remember those skating Christmas ads from years back?) the GAP's time has come - it's over GAP - sorry GAP RIP

Audry Hepburn wishes she could come back from the dead to blow ANGUS YOUNG. AC/DC makes any commercial cool. And as for the tool that said that AC/DC will sell this song to anyone w/ a check book--get it straight: The record company that AC/DC recently severed ties with is responsible for this atrocity, not AC/DC. They have never sold out. Hell--the only AC/DC songs that have EVER been featured for ANY media use are Back in Black and You Shook ME, and that was a grand total of TWO commercials---EVER.....you're a stooge.

I've seen the commercial twice and thought: Well, Ms. Hepburn didn't have a say in the matter ('cause she's dead). It isn't as bad as the Fred Astaire dancing with the floor-cleaner-thingy (whatever it was). It will soon go away like the Astaire/floor cleaner thingy.

I saw it and i thought the commercial was great. However, since she was a Icon of CLASS, SOPHISITCATION, AND STYLE.

you are right that the AC/DC music juxtaposed against Audrey Hepburn, when deconstructed, may not seem to work. But when you just watch the ad - it is mesmerizing! Fun, cool, hip, energizing. Such graphics, such energy. It's one of the best ads I've ever seen and whoever did it deserves BIG kudos!

FABULOUS commercial! Not only looks cool, but it's from one of Audrey Hepburn's greatest films. -has nothing to do with really selling Gap clothes (except for the fact that she's wearing the style of pants?) Still when have the Gap commercials ever made sense? Nevertheless, I was entertained!

it shatters me to see audrey hepburn paired with gap's skinny black pants. (ps, um, i'm not FAT, James) i even work in advertising. i will rock out to ACDC any day. i will also admire Funny Face any day. just not in conjuction. and not for commercial purposes. the dichotomy created by the three juxtaposed - ACDC, Audrey, and the Gap - strikes an extreme and uncomfortable dissonance with me. i am upset even by the billboards and the store signs.

I don't normally watch commercials, but, whenever I see this one go zipping by, I back up and watch, sometimes twice. It's wonderful; she's wonderful. I definitely won't try to fit into those pants, though, so it's a bit of a failure on that score. I may, however, give up ice cream for awhile.

Going back to what GROWINTHINGS says about fat women not liking the commercial because they cnat fit into skiny pants--I'm fat, I know enough NOT to wear skinny pants, and I LOVE the commercial--everything about it. I'd much rather watch IT than the original movie it came from.

the campiagn is fabulous. i got skinny pants just because audrey had them and it was...so cool. sometimes people who work in advertising get so caught up in things that they don't realize the effect of ads on normal, everyday people who dont work in the ad world or care much for it. they just like to be entertained and belong--and this campaign does that. skinny me that.

I don't think there's anything with the ad - audrey hepburn was hugely influential in terms of fashion; people have been imitating her forever. you could say that gap is rightly giving her credit for skinny black pants, because in many ways she helped make them what they are today. and yeah, they're not flattering on everybody, but neither are most fashion trends. have a little imagination people, and make your own styles.
and as for the juxtaposition with the AC/DC...it's not THAT bad...

I worry that Hepburn might not have liked this use of her image, but I also feel glad that her image is out there to be happened upon accidentally. That's how I came to love classic films (back when TV used them as time-filler), and commercials like these are one of the few ways to get young people aware of them now.
