McDonald’s commercials take absurd turn

Mcdonalds_4 This is what happens when you get Kip Dynamite (aka the actor and photographer Aaron Ruell) to direct your McDonald’s ads. You get your talking Filet-O-Fishes, hamburgers, Chicken McNuggets, french fries, etc., most of them sporting foreign accents, chatting earnestly (sometimes nonsensically) about the various absurd predicaments they find themselves in. See the five spots, created by Leo Burnett, here, here, here, here and here. Each ad also has an absurd “lesson” to deliver at the end. The Filet-O-Fish ad in particular feels like it goes on forever. Even Napoleon Dynamite fans might have some trouble latching onto this stuff. Via ’boards.

Filet-o-fish. Apply directly to the forehead.

That Filet-O-Fish ad makes me want to rush to McDonald's and beat up a Filet-O-Fish.

These are great. I'm loving it

The only thing worse than these on TV right now is the cack-handed nike anna sharapova spot. blech.

Ugly food and truly inane concepts. When is something so bad that you aren't sure it's bad?

Posted by: FLIPPANT | Sep 7, 2006 12:08:54 PM

Really horrible. I can't even think of anything worse than that right now...

me,

i can think of something worse than those mickey d's spots.

eating at mickey d's.

I like the filet o fish one. I imagine that the british fish is Ben Kingsley's character from "Sexy Beast" and he's about to take a big bite out of the irritating american fish. I think these are kind of clever and are far more interesting than anything involving singing or the pretense of a healthy lifestyle.

It woulda been fun if we were a bunch of high-school kids playing with a video camera.
but seriously. Would I, as a "professional" have allowed my name to be added to the credits list? Not likely. I'd prefer having a future.

um... lighten up.

Posted by: Orlando | Sep 8, 2006 8:06:14 AM

look. these starfucking "creative directors" are proud of this pile of shit, enough to submit it to trade pubs - so we should tell them they are a bunch of unfunny hacks with no mojo at all, and they should be embarassed by how bad these are.

i have seen so many creatives who were absolutely brilliant at what they did that envy was the only emotion i could displayas it inspired me to do better...so to see something like this is heartbreaking and completely devoid of creativity and i wish those who truly are talented have an opportunity to one day shine and actually come out from behind the shadows and be admired.

I think you guys are allergic to campaigns that stand out. And by that I mean successful ones.

Posted by: kit | Sep 11, 2006 6:40:28 PM

These Mc'D ads may not be for you, but they speak directly to an age-group and a consumer that is sick of watching our normally over-produced ads. They are funny, and witty on a whole different level. Get your culture references straight...Those that get-it won't be using Napolen Dynamite as a comparison...Check "Aqua-Teen-Hunger-Force".

Past that, these ads stand-up on their own even without that pop-culture reference. Public humor is getting more absurd and I for one almost fell off my chair laughing when I watched these.

A great campaign! Thanks Aaron Ruell!

I think that coffee commercial is the worst thing on tv.

Posted by: Alma | Sep 19, 2006 12:42:48 AM

The English guy could not say 'oh' and would only say 'ah' because foreigners are stupid.

I'm lovin' it. And stuff.

I've only seen the filet o fish commercial online. Has it actually been shown on TV?

Posted by: kwilfort | Apr 2, 2007 11:50:17 PM

They showed it on TV during the NBA finals last night. Best part of the whole game.

I blogged about this. Saw it yesterday. It was terrible but it was funny because of this other story that happened to me of which it is reminiscent. Seriously, this is a terrible commercial, though.

This ad make me want to puke. I think they are trying to brain wash me. What\\\'s going on with this commercial? Were they not going to make the deadline and rushed out this POS? Did they run out of money for their ad campaigns for the rest of the year? This commercial is so bad, id\\\' rather eat my own puke!

The Filet-O-Fish ad was one of the worst advertisements I'd ever seen. Until McDonald's actually ran it during the NBA Finals. Then it became sublime. I despise Napoleon Dynamite, and I despise these ads on their own, but when a corporation like McDonald's actually pays to run sixty seconds of "Filet-O-Fish" on repeat... I can't help but think maybe the world has a chance.
