OMG, amex is soooo busted. if they saw O'Keefe's arrows first, then they TOTALLY ripped them off. don't get me started about the white background. the arrows AND the white background totally prove it.
somebody never learned the 7th commandment.

This happens all the time in adland, let's be honest about it.
Be interesting to see how this pans out, considering that O'Keefe has trademarked his strapline.
If nothing else, though, it's raised O'Keefe's profile: just do a search on Google and you'll see this story has been plastered all over the Web news sites.

This guy has got to be kidding. You mean to tell me that two people couldn't have come up with a similar idea independently? There's nothing new in advertising. Ogilvy probably didn't even look at this guy's portfolio.

Either way, like racial diversity hearings, this'll get settled privately and mostly off the radar.
Great self-promo move though for juniors. Claim someone else did your work. Post it. Let CDs check it out. Even if the work is way off, at least you got them to look.

--I just read the release and Okeefe sent his resume and samples to Ogilvy. I dont know much about the case but I do think its too close for comfort and I hope he wins! This happens all the time and its nice to see someone stand up do something about it!

Anyone remember the old NY Post campaign, "the 3 biggest lies in NY" and the oft-cited story of how it was ripped off from a junior book campaign for the National Enquirer?

The lack of originality in advertising is appalling. Of course they steal ideas from everything they see! Here in Philly, we have a commercial for hearing aids that is an obvious rip-off of Sprint's mis-heard phone calls gag. The only difference: in the Sprint ads, it was funny; in the hearing aid commercial, it's just pathetic. Who wants to see an elderly man insist, "I know what I heard"? Another local Philly rip-off: There was an old commercial for WPVI 6's "Accu-Weather" forecasts, where an elderly woman wins a bet at a race track because she knows, "Accu-Weather said it's going to rain!" In the new version (now for KYW 3), some guy gets soaked in the rain while another guy with an umbrella laughs at him and says "Kathy said it would!" From sweet to nasty. And did it really surprise anybody, when Pennsylvania had a contest for a new state slogan, that half of the submissions would be stolen from existing ads? The only surprise was that the people running the contest didn't notice that "The State of Independence" (the winning slogan) was already being used by SAAB!
