Sharapova feels pretty and witty and bright

Unlike another female tennis player whose image has been often downloaded over the years, Maria Sharapova isn’t just another pretty face. Nike has some fun with that in this U.S. Open spot. And yes, in this commercial she is feeling pretty and witty and bright, not pretty and witty and gay. But that isn’t Nike’s change. The original stage lyrics for West Side Story were “bright” and “tonight.” They were changed to “gay” and “today” for the movie. Thanks to Ben for the tip.

Thanks. I was wondering why they had changed the lyrics for the commercial. And now I know.

I really like this ad. Everytime it come on I actually enjoy watching it - and kind of get a little sad when it's over. Like a favorite song you might catch on the radio.

And the pout she is making through the whole thing is really in great contrast to the song making a great message/statment/PR move for her.

It's funny how everytime I see someone who screws something, just doesn't get it, or is just complaining it's Tim Nudd's column. The song, as it was written by Leonard Bernstein, had the lyrics "bright" and "tonite," not "gay" and "today." The play, however, uses the more well-known lyrics. Get your facts straight.

Way much better than that silly Canon spot that she takes a picture of a smiley made of tennis balls.
