Author says Hepburn wasn’t into fashion

We’re not alone in disliking the Gap ad featuring Audrey Hepburn dancing to AC/DC. According to this story, Donald Spoto, author of the just-released Enchantment: The Life of Audrey Hepburn, says the actress actually never got all tied up in her, uh, designer panties over the issue of fashion. He says, her position as a style icon "directly contradicts her own sense of values, which did not place clothes very highly on a list of important things." There’s no mention of whether Spoto’s record collection includes any AC/DC. Since we've all seen the Gap ad by now, the YouTube video above links to a remix of Hepburn dancing to the Isley Brothers "Twist 'n' Shout."

Gap ads have sucked for soooo long. I don't think they even know who the target is anymore. This is just the latest misguided spot they've plastered across America. Their agency gets away with murder spending big bucks behind small ideas. No wonder their sales are in the toilet.

I don't hate the ad. I find it mesmerizing.

Am I the only one who finds it slightly offending that: A) Audrey Hepburn is unfortunately not around to give permission for a chain of arguable fashion taste to use her image, and B) the pants features that are supposed to be GAPs new style were in fact hand created by Hubert de Givenchy himself specifically for Audrey? Givenchy. A legend. for Audrey Hepburn. A legend. Now... Givenchy. Hepburn. GAP. Let's play Where's Waldo and see which one doesn't fit? I get what they are trying to do. But honestly... It sucks. Period.

Audrey Hepburn's character is what's being paid for in the ad. Most of Audrey Hepburn's characters were very fashion conscious, which is why her character was used for the ad in the first place.

It is a shame, however, the Gap ads lack more and more creativity every season.
