Gap holiday commercial has Common touch

Commongapad So Gap unveiled its new holiday ad yesterday, but there’s not a Christmas tree (or even red or green) in sight. Instead, it’s a rap performed by Common, which is very much in the peace, love and grooviness vein, and sells the Gap hoodie as much as anything. It’s quite watchable, especially compared with that excruciating Audrey Hepburn-AC/DC debacle (not that I have an opinion on that ad or anything). To see this new spot, far as I can tell, you have to go to the Gap site. So far, it’s not posted on YouTube. There’s also a print campaign featuring various and sundry celebrities, but so far, not Baby Jake.

This ad just goes to show that the GAP is still out of touch with mainstream America. Case in point, try wearing your hood in any of the public middle/high schools in America and you'll be pounced on like a common criminal. Hoods (and hats) simply are not allowed on campuses that millions of school kids attend. Next thing you know, the GAP will be rolling out their head rag wardrobe for spring...

Where I live, my kids and their classmates wear hoodies and baseball caps all over the place, from elementary through high school, so I don't get the last poster's rant about kids getting "pounced on like a common criminal." I really don't get it. But this Common guy? Hood up, he looks like the Unabomber.

"Mainstream America?"

Thank you, Mr. Spokesman, for speaking up for us!

I doff my hat to you and my hood overfloweth.

I'm a college student and I've never had a problem wearing a hoodie anywhere... on campus or back in high school.

Love the ad, btw. too bad their clothes are generally boring and uninspired.

I LOVE THIS AD! Even though I don't particular like GAP much, this ad makes me want to shop at the store.

Hoodies are always in and being someone that went to an inner-city public high school I can tell you that they are not against the dress code.

GAP is very much in touch with mainstream America and using Common in their ad just goes to show how in tune they are.

Anyone notice any similarities?

No, what are the similarities?

I dont know about the hoodies comment, but I do have an opinion about Common. I'm thinking he kind of sold out. He's very anti-"The Man." Yet here he is, dancing on the Soul Brother logo, promoting clothing that has a history of using sweat shops, and no history of fitting into the Hip Hop genre. For Shame Common...

I dont get the first comment about how if you wear a hoodie you're tagged as a common criminal. At my high school it seems like half of the student bodies wear hoodies, and quite a few wear hats or beanies with the hoodie. It's kind of a fashion and I myself wear hoodies (i like slimmer hoodies). Maybe the poster was another old hag who doesn't get the fashion that is popular among teens and young adults.
BTW, Common looks really spiffy in that outfit, I love that new hoodie. With the dresswear underneath he looks sophisticated yet laid back and relaxed because of the hoodie and hat. His hat is really neat.

Sold out?!? This is great hip-hop and you're killin' it by going beyond critical...and micromanaging might I add? Since when did a "peace sign" become a "soul brother logo"...and do you call that dancing? Ease up and enjoy a rare golden moment of hip hop music. (AND I MEAN RARE) Who produced this track? Anyone?
