Starbucks warms up its holiday cheer

Starbucksholidayguy Starbucks has begun its annual holiday effort, focusing, as we guess is their custom, on random acts of kindness. The company is handing out free subway passes in New York and giving away cab rides in Boston and San Francisco. It’s also reprising the “coffee on cars” promo, in which people drive around with a Starbucks cup on their roof until someone tips them off, with the tipster getting a free cup of coffee. New this year is the good-deed equivalent of chain letters. Starbucks is distributing numbered “cheer passes,” which are described at cheerpass.com: “Each time an act of kindness takes place, the Cheer Giver gives the Cheer Receiver a Cheer Pass that encourages them to pass cheer onto another person.” The passes and the good deeds associated with them can be tracked at the site. The main hub for Starbucks’ holiday activity this year is itsredagain.com, which is governed by the guy at right, billed as the “Tradition Keeper.”

This is basically Monk-E-Mail with yet another annoying napoleon-dynomite-inspired nonthreatening dork cheekily narrating the action.

Powerade? Moviephone? Now this. Get out of Jared Hess's asscrack while the industry still has an ounce of respect for you guys.

Dude. What the hell is going on in Portland?

And how many people have REALLY submitted their "traditions?" If it gets over 1000, I'll eat my hat.

And look, I can get behind the whole idea of the "chain of cheer" but show me where it gets better than giving away money.

Gawd!

Over 1400 submissions to date. Hat, meet mouth.

Subtract the ones you guys did yourself.

Then subtract the ones done by the family and friends of people at Starbucks and WK.

Until then, I remain hungrily yours,

D
