This time, it’s the Zune vs. the iPod
There don’t seem to be enough ways to parody the Mac vs. PC campaign from Apple, but this one, via Engadget, is worth a mention since it was reportedly screened at a recent Microsoft company meeting. It makes the point that—in Microsoft’s, view at least—the Zune is much simpler to use than the iPod. Not that the iPod seems capable of losing share at this point, but as parodies go, this is fairly well done. If my addled memory serves, the guy playing the PC is long-ago MTV VJ Kevin Seal. |

Regardless of whether the Zune takes off when it hits the UK, there are some points to make:
Zuners can share songs, but only play them three times before buying them. I might not be able to wireless share with an iPod, but I can play any songs from my friends as many times as I like once I've got them.
Does anyone buy through iTunes? I don't. Ever heard of Hype Machine, Elbo.ws or others? Blogs give me new music way before iTunes does. I've only purchased once from iTunes.
Putting my music on a Zune must happen the same way as with an iPod? So, it's only ease of sharing that the Zune has over the iPod.
Does anyone really want a brown (sh*t-coloured, I'll bet) music player?
However, the parody of the Mac ads is good. But is it enough? Not for me it isn't...

Zune users are so hip, they pronounce Raconteurs "Rock-on-tours."
The saddest thing about Zune's all-their-eggs-in-one-basket marketing approach is that once Apple adds song-sharing to iPods (probably w/in 6 mos.) MSoft will have nothing left to talk about. Oh, except that Zune comes in sh*t brown (how appropriate).

Sharing songs. Nobody asked for that feature. Nobody wants it. Maybe if they would have made the Zune CHEAPER they would have a real reason to compete with the iPod. Sharing songs, who cares?

It's a good parody, though neglects to mention how popular iMixes are, and how easy they are to create (assuming you've figured out how to right-click a playlist).
However, this ad corroborates nothing. People want corroboration, which the original Mac ad has in spade loads.
When can I buy a Zune in the UK? I already bought an iPod, why would I ditch that for a Zune? And I own a Mac, which won't work with the Zune. Why would I ditch my iPod yet?
The more Microsoft tightens it grip, the more systems slip through it's fingers ......

Zune, is there no shame at Microsoft? They rip off the iPod concept and put in "features" that no one wants, makes them difficult if not impossible to navigate, and still cripple the music not only with DRM but it doesn't even download from the microsoft website music store. Then just to show what absolute innovative thinkers they are they actually steal the Apple commercial. God that's what I want, a crippled music player thought up by guys who can't even come up with an original commercial. If this is the level of thought and originality that went into the advertising, what's in the Zune must be a discount mp3 piece of junk shoved into a new housing.
