The Celtics will always have 1950-66
Adidas is shipping colorful Red Auerbach sneakers and jerseys ($115 and $100, respectively) celebrating the late Auerbach’s legendary 1950-66 tenure as Boston Celtics’ coach, an era punctuated by the team winning eight consecutive NBA titles from 1959-66. That’s eight straight championships. Imagine such a run today? The Celtics can’t, with an 18-44 record that places them last in the Atlantic Conference. Of course, Red’s trademark cigar appears on the shoe. The team’s current coach, Doc Rivers, has no such iconography, but with a .290 winning percentage, a commemorative sneaker probably isn’t in the offing. However, he may get booted at the end of the season.

Other Celtics ad lore: Bill Russell did a great TV spot for AT&T long distance back in the 1970s - the tagline was something like "put'em through yourself and save." That is, dial direct, don't have the operator do it for you. I also remember a weird corporate ad for some industry or another featuring John Havlicek. But did Dave Cowens ever do an endorsement?
