WWF on the devil and the deep blue sea

Nice ambient twist on an outdoor board in this clip of DraftFCB’s work for the Canadian World Wildlife Fund. My only beef is that it oversells a bit. Claiming that ocean levels are rising “faster than ever” implies you’ve got some pretty impressive data, but I couldn’t find it on the WWF site. There’s lots of global warming info, but nothing specific about sea levels. So I poked around on Google and learned two things: 1) The oceans are apparently rising about 2 millimeters a year, compared with a longstanding average of 1 millimeter a year; and 2) I shouldn’t buy real estate in Tuvalu. A for effort. But unless the board will be viewed in time-lapse photography (or people sit and stare at it for an hour at a time); the effect, I suspect, will be wholly lost.

The great ideas are simple, but anon commenter is right. Even if you pass it every day on your way to work, you're passing it at the same time every day and never seeing the change.

(Sea change? ....sorry)

It seems that even if someone were to pass by often enough to get the effect, they would only see the effect from sometime after 12:00 noon to sunset. When the sun is directly overhead the entire board would be black and as it set, the "water level" would rise. It's amusing to think of a mix up with someone placing it facing east so that the water level actually lowers throughout the day.

Perhaps that's why they made a video of it. Far more effective on youtube.

Blah blah blah. It's cool. They did a great job. They did something different. Maybe a motorist won't get the full-impact of the time-elapsed photography, but it still works. And, the really amazing thing: 12,000 people have watched a billboard on youtube. A BILLBOARD! I think that counts as brilliant.
