Dunkin’ Donuts maps out latest strategy

Dunkin Dunkin’ Donuts has partnered with MapQuest on Myicedcoffee.com, which lets you plan road trips and find Dunkin’ locations nationwide. “It’s really important for us to defend our leadership in iced coffee,” Scott Hudler, client director of marketing, tells the Boston Globe. A bold assertion, but maybe questionable once winter rolls around. “Everyone wants to know where the Dunkin’ is when they’re on the road,” says Dave Tryder, Dunkin manager of relationship marketing, in the same story. I usually want to know the most direct route to my destination, but that’s just me. A tie-in with the Simpsons movie would be a no-brainer: “Mmm, basically accurate yet confusing directions to donuts.” I’m tempted to suggest Gold’s Gym or Weight Watchers develop a complementary service, but that would be a cheap shot. Besides, I could go for a chocolate frosted right about now.

OMG...this just gave me one of those "A-Ha" moments. Like this one...who the heck is going to search online for iced coffee websites? Is a vanity website really the best idea Scott could come up with in pursuit of the noble, critical cause of defending Dunkin' Donuts 'leadership' in iced coffee? And will someone tell Dave that not everyone wants to know where the Dunkin' is when on the road...take me for instance.

Sorry, the silliness of it all was just too overwhelming for me. Maybe I should have had a donut with extra sprinkles before posting this...

David,

I like your writing and all, but come on, can you write just one column without mentioning Boston or MA? Seriously, have you ever left the city?

Have you ever met someone from Boston?

A: They rarely leave.

B: They explode if they don't have Dunkin' Donuts coffee every 4 hours.

so i'm guessing none of these road trips involve destinations in california?

"Cops, Donuts, and Murder". . . at last a book that establishes proof beyond a reasonable doubt that cops crave Dunkin Donuts.
