A chilling pro-war ad from what’s-his-name

Iraq veterans and their families are front and center in a new $15 million pro-war ad campaign from a group called Freedom’s Watch, comprised mostly of ex-Bush administration officials. The spot above features John Kriesel, who lost both legs in Iraq but still wants the U.S. to stay the course. The spot is heavy, but the campaign would be more convincing if Ari Fleischer, its spokesman, had bothered to learn Kriesel’s name before going on Hardball. Ari may be overwhelmed by his dual roles as supporter of the Iraq war on the one hand and of metal bats in youth baseball games on the other. See all of the Freedom’s Watch ads here.

Why do you have to call it a "chilling pro-war ad?" What's chilling about it? At least John Kriesel isn't a coward, the fact is that we have a volunteer army and I'm proud most of our soldiers want to continue fighting in Iraq. Unlike most civilians, they understand the mission.

Of course, to Tim this must be shocking, like most liberals, he's been exposed to commie movies like "Born on the Fourth of July." That's what Hollywood and the media loves, soldiers who \ turn against their country.
Shameful.

You don't find the fact Kriesel lost both his legs to be chilling?

You a much more desensitized man than me, bobby.

Hey Proud, "chilling" sounded like a negative word to describe a pro-war ad.

If an adjective must be used, it should be "patriotic"

Staying the course eh? Like the Russians "stayed the course" in afghanistan. and the brits "stayed the course" in afghanistan and Iraq and palestine. the us invasion of iraq is just another in a series of misguided middle-eastern imperial adventures by ill-informed western powers who didn't know what they were getting into.

here's how it works: we leave eventually because we get sick of the quagmire. we have a choice. we can leave. and we will.

you can't beat the iraqis because they've got nowhere else to go. they don't have a choice. they can't leave. so ultimately they "win". to the extent that anyone can win anything out of this mess.

know your history.

Man, I can only wonder what the creative brief read like. The agency that took this job should be ashamed. This isin't advertising, it's propaganda.

well lookee who's back. it's bobby. everything that's wrong with the country in one convenient nut-job (TM, 2007). Yeah bobby, lets kill everyone! whoohoo!

"They attacked us? And they will again."

I'm still shocked that Americans aren't outraged that we attacked the wrong country. Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11.

Posted by: Andy Bosselman | Aug 23, 2007 8:03:58 PM

yes andy. turns out americans aren't really that bothered. about anything, apparently. the lack of outrage is breath-taking.

You know what GROW UP!, grow up!

I don't know if I would call this ad "chilling." I have talked to a number of soldiers who believe what this soldier believes. I have talked to others who feel this invasion was a bad idea. It's the great thing about this country, you get to hear both sides of the story.

Posted by: thatguy | Aug 26, 2007 9:28:05 PM

the invasion was a colossal error because it was based on false premises. our combat-averse boobs-in-chief lied to us...WMDs...non-existent connection to Al Qaeda.

that some soldiers understandably feel the need to justify their efforts and the needless deaths of their comrades doesn't change that tragic fact.

Posted by: this guy | Aug 27, 2007 10:19:26 AM

The soldiers understand the effort because they're there, they're not getting anti-war drivel from CNN. And unlike civilians, soldiers are willing to die for their country so they don't go crying and bitching everytime someone dies. The left on the other hand are terrified of death, which is why they bitch about war, smoking, obesity, transfats, global warming and all that. People who think religion is evil need to live forever, because they don't know where they'll go after they die.

Posted by: Bobby | Aug 28, 2007 3:22:19 PM

bobby,

you conveniently ignore the fact that the war was started under false pretenses. and not by people on the left. who have been out of power for years now. so we can ignore that.

at this point it has moved far beyond left/right ideological debate. it's a question of why are we still there and, assuming we continue fighting the iraqis, what would victory look like? a peaceful iraq with a democratic government? that appears to be elusive. and i'm not aware of how president bush would define victory. has he ever defined it?

Posted by: this guy | Aug 28, 2007 7:21:19 PM

Hey this guy, the war was started under wrong intelligence information that even the British and the Russians believed to be true.

Eventually the soldiers will go home, but not right away unless we want to see Iraq become another Iran or a Somalia.

The terrorists have to be controlled first.

Posted by: Bobby | Aug 29, 2007 4:19:39 PM

So you admit that the war was started under false pretenses. that's a start.

but your definition of victory is extremely ambiguous. Iraq not becoming a theocracy? it may have escaped your attention but theocracies are big in the middle east. for example, our good friends and allies -- and suppliers of 80% of the 9/11 bombers and home of Osama bin Laden -- Saudi Arabia.

and it's interesting that you feel "we" have to determine what's right for the Iraqi people. don't they get a say in this? were we not liberators? or are we just another imperial force like the Brits and the soviets. who, coincidentally, also invaded the region and got their asses kicked too. despite having overwhelmingly superior conventional armies.

PS: you can't "control" terrorists by conventional means. that's whole point of being a terrorist.

bobby,

i'd love to get into a deep discussion with you about how a little gun control would go a long way in Iraq but this married upstanding right wing family-values republican senator in the stall next to me keeps propositioning me for gay sex.

John Kriesel has become greedy... he's milking this for everything he and his wife can get....
