Ecstatic simian drummer loves Phil Collins

Gorilla I don’t know what this has to do with Cadbury Dairy Milk, but it’s funny. Among gorilla drummers, it seems the work of Phil Collins inspires a genuine cosmic connection. Created by Fallon London’s Juan Cabral, one of the creatives behind the Sony Bravia “Balls” spot.

it must be nice to work with clients who let you do whatever you want. and encourage you to use crystal meth along the way.

That was very entertaining and funny.

It was also telegraphed beyond all belief.

It also had bupkus to do with milk, or chocolate, or ... anything.

(Ker-pow! Another $200K shot to hell for the sake of creative stroking!)

Posted by: Duane | Aug 31, 2007 12:37:12 PM

I agree, it was completely telegraphed, but pretty well done. I was laughing from the start... the close ups, the lip curl... if Phil was a gorilla, that was him.

Did it not bring you joy? That was the point. If eating that candy bar brought me anywhere close to that much joy, I would eat it in a second.

Posted by: thatguy | Aug 31, 2007 2:17:13 PM

that was awesome. anyone who thinks otherwise needs to untangle their shorts. it's candy people. relax. the client clearly has.

Posted by: dairymilkman | Aug 31, 2007 2:33:11 PM

Easy there, skippy.

Entertaining? Absolutely. Advertising? Not so much.

Show me how the sales figures shot up after this aired (or webbed, or whateer), and then we can argue about how good it was (and I will humbly untangle my shorts).

With the line at the end "A glass and a half of joy", the spot seems to come together. Considering that the Gorilla gets pretty pumped up as he listens to his iPod, it then becomes apparent that all Gorilla's derive Joy from playing drums to Phil Collins. Somebody call Jane Goodall.

This is not an ad running on TV. It's a video on the internet that they want people to come to. Therefore, it has to be interesting. Much in they way programs on television are interesting and people come to watch them. We then place ads in them that have nothing to do with the program. Think of this as the 'program' that they created to put only their name on. Just like 'Texaco' were the soul sponsors of The Milton Berle Show.

To Duane's point, I would love to see how it worked on the sales end.

From the creators: "Well it just seemed like the right thing to do. There's no clever science behind it - it's just an effort to make you smile, in exactly the same way Cadbury Dairy Milk does. And that's what we aim to continue to do; simply make you smile. So if a drumming gorilla's not enough, wait until you see what else we have up our sleeves."

It worked. My face is hurting from laughing. As a viral video, it's spot on. I just tweeted and IM'd it.

Posted by: | Aug 31, 2007 6:32:14 PM

duane,

don't be tiresome.

Posted by: dairymilkman | Aug 31, 2007 6:38:19 PM

well it worked for me!
v v cool guys
surely its about delayed gratification and anticipated ecstasy as you wait for those drums to come in... (or taste that chocolate)

Posted by: revdrjc | Aug 31, 2007 7:28:16 PM

pretty good. i was waiting for a little tom-tom action tho. I just kept hitting the snare.

Posted by: craig | Aug 31, 2007 8:39:15 PM

I agree with Craig; I don't know the song, but we needed a crash and some hi hat in the last second and a half to seal the deal.

this will win all the awards. as it should. it's incredibly awesome.

it's for a brand of chocolate (cadburys) in a market that has 100% awareness and 100% trial. and 100% understanding of what a glass and a half means - how much milk goes into each bar. there really is nothing to say here. it's the bud of chocolate.

like to challenge that one duane?

I watched this ad maybe 30 times. I laughed every time. God bless the power of apes and phil collins.

Come come with the kick drum.

The first time through didn't mean much, but every time after is a jewel. Remember when Carly Simon sang "Anticipation" on a ketchup commercial? It's the same thing! It's all about savoring the anticipation. As we drive down the road of life, and that particular Phil Collins song comes on the radio, don't we all anticipate the drums? Nothing before, and nothing after, really matters. It's the drums. The gorilla knows that - as we should anticipate whatever product is being advertised. It's brilliant!

Posted by: Norm | Sep 2, 2007 8:05:22 PM

it's a classic. norm is right.

once again, this is going to win every single possible award. and should. you read it here first folks.

Posted by: dairymilkman | Sep 2, 2007 10:53:34 PM

Brilliant. And even if I discovered a clump of gorilla pubic hair in my Cadbury chocolate, I'd still think it was brilliant.

Loved it. Doesn't make we want to buy chocolate, but it does make we want to drag the drums out of the garage. Great Phil caricature!

Got the distinct impression from my UK friends that this is NOT a "viral" (e.g. web-only) ad, but actually runs on TV.

Anyone want to confirm?

Posted by: Tangerine Toad | Sep 4, 2007 11:03:11 AM

'Entertaining, yes. Advertising, no'? Are you serious. Probably, and that's sad.

As far as I'm concerned, the brief for every candy ad I have ever made, or ever will make, is make it as fun and enjoyable as the candy you are advertising - and it works. If someone honestly thinks candy is a sophisticated product that has a 'latent psycho-demographic driver' or some kind of mumbojumbo-USP, well then they really need to shut off the computer, leave the office for while and go for a long walk. It's candy people, it's supposed to be fun.

Yip this has been running on British television since the Big Brother final last Friday night.

It's not as funny as the Twix Mr.T ad, but it's certainly up the with the best of the past year.

Posted by: Davy | Sep 4, 2007 12:53:42 PM

Thanks Davy. Funny how people assume that anything this clever is meant for the interweb only.

Posted by: Tangerine Toad | Sep 5, 2007 10:05:24 AM

Is this what they mean by Gorilla Marketing? haha
