iPod ad songs: a catalog of catchiness

Ipodfeist If you’ve got a short snippet of hip music stuck on repeat in your brain, chances are it’s from an iPod TV spot. The newest one, a nice mellow break from the usual dance-club fare, is “1234” by Feist. (You can see the ad here and the music video over here.) For your retrospective convenience, a Canadian site has even started a list of iTunes links for most of the songs featured by Apple over the years. Also worth a look is the blog iPoor’s collection of ad clips — including the first-ever iPod commercial from the days before silhouettes reigned supreme.

The song was used a couple months ago in a really cool HBO promo. Apple is becoming a habitual offender when it comes to ripping off other ads.

I put that song in the category of great for an ad, but I could care less to hear it any other time. There are lots of songs that work wonderfully with images flowing over them, but take away the image, and you have something pleasant but not especially special.
