Volvo pulls over, picks up Stephin Merritt
Fans of Stephin Merritt are mourning the end of civilization now that their depressive homeboy has earned a few bucks by recording a track for the above Volvo ad. Merritt’s music usually makes people want to drive off a mountainside rather than up and down one, but his weary nursery-rhyme performance makes this quirky and enjoyable spot work. |

Quirky and enjoyable? The music in this spot annoys me more and more every time I see it. It has already reached the point at which I scream and scramble desperately for the mute button when the ad begins.

Why didn't the world end when TMF's "I Think I Need A New Heart" was used (and still running, i believe) for Cesar dog food; when "Boa Constrictor" was used for Ivory; when "Dessert Island" was used for (insert brand) alcohol(rum?); "Kiss Me Like You Mean It" used for diamonds; etc...
I am offended by the "drive off..." comment. Trite much? Why can't anyone appreciate how hilariously poignant SM's lyrics are. And the concise quality and immediacy lends the lyrics perfectly to shorts/spots.

Yeah, he's great. But you gotta admit he's a fucking sad-sack.

Go home and die, ye prehistoric faggots. SM is a genius and his music is fucking god. All together now: this is music anyone can dig, regardless of personal hang-up. The punks can go to a PBR sponsored circle jerk and drink themselves into oblivion and we will all forget that money ever existed. Whoop Dee Do.
