Don’t drink and build with Lowe’s coasters

Lowescoasters Lowe’s, which is already doing the world a service by keeping Gene Hackman from completely falling off the face of the earth, has now come out with these nifty coasters, courtesy of BBDO New York. They’re probably not suitable for serious home improvement initiatives, but you could certainly use them to annoy your bartender with intricate bar-top construction projects. Via adgoodness.

Vox why is it bullshit? Please explain. And what's "fake" about it? I think it's a great idea. It's something unexpected... it's not intrusive either. It's a pleasant surprise and fits Lowe's image very well. And it's not meant to be some 360 complete rebranding campaign for Lowe's. It's an outdoor guerilla ad. Yeah maybe it's just one piece, but if it works, it works.

Let me define "single-shot bullshit."

Something that's not part of a bigger campaign. Or idea. It doesn't have to be "some complete 360 complete rebranding campaign" but it should be PART of SOMETHING.

Something (home improvement) that has nothing to do with the place the piece is found (a bar.) Presumably ONE bar. Presumably somewhere in midtown.

There was no money contributed for this, no brief, and therefore no bar to clear.

And for those three reasons, this doesn't work.

For anyone.

Except the creatives who made it.
