Erin Brockovich policing New Zealand ads

Erin Having brought the mighty Pacific Gas & Electric Co. to its knees, Erin Brockovich has now turned her attention to ridding New Zealand of stupid advertising copy. The 47-year-old activist recently took exception to an appliance retailer’s print ad, which read, “Government says fridges are better younger. Just like women really,” and got the ad pulled. “I expressed my outrage and my disappointment in them for running such an advertisement. I demanded its retraction and they agreed to do so,” she says. The company’s CEO says, “I can understand why some people were offended, so we’ll just put that in our book of learning.” Perhaps that’ll be the company’s first entry in such a book. Ironically, Brockovich just signed an endorsement deal for one of the same company’s other brands—a commitment she says she’ll continue to honor. Via Spare Room.

She's a blonde. They can be old and get away with that stuff. I know it is so. My sisters have blonde hair and still have it all. Money, careers, kids, grandkids, homes, husbands.

If she had grey hair, she would be down on her luck.

Nancy, it's not enough to be a blonde, you also have to be pretty. Your sister must be pretty.

Bobby, not you again. Really.

They look just like me but they have prettier noses and blonde hair. They are also not as brutally honest as me. My fault. I'm not jealous. Im just sayin...only their hairdressers know.

Doctor,

whose that in the corner? Trying to keep up with me.
And I don't know if you can do it. Oh no, I've said too much

yoooo! Doctor,

Who is that in the corner? Trying to keep up with me?
And I don't know if you can do it.

Oh no, I've said too much
I haven't said enough.

You need to lose your religion.

Sorry I had to post that twice. Preaching to the pastor.

actually, the story is round the wrong way.

because Erin B agreed to be paid to promote Noel Leeming and didn't check out the company before hand she has been blindsided by their marketing for their other brand Bond+Bond.

The company is trying to buy corporate social responsiblity at the same time as its owners (evil private equity) are trying to sell the business.

I wonder if Ralph Nader is up for sale? Nelson Mandela?

Bobby, not you again. Really.

---I was here before you were.

Anyway, Erin Brockovich needs to get a life. I expect famous liberals to campaign for their usual idiotic causes like those campaigns to ban land mines, global warming, gun control, anti-fur ads, campaigns against animal testing, and all that nonsense.

In fact, even if the ad is tasteless, a younger fridge is a better fridge because it's more energy efficient. And Erin needs to remember that in New Zealand the kiwis like their advertising to be politically incorrect, even if their society is ultra-left-wing.

Bobby

maybe Erin can pry one from your cold hands, seeing that you've been around the iceblock a few times.

As for politics who the heck knows? I don't know the difference between liberal allowances. It all seems like ambidextrous buffalo wings to me.

ugh, they need to start executing sucky posters here like they do on gawker.com

as for the ad, i think they sat in a room and said, what is the most offensive thing we can write that will get press...if that is not the case, what a sad sad world.

Erin yells look at me I am advertising that I am in New Zealand by expressing outrage and the company that is funding me.... Quick come and look. The company she is complaining about is all part of the same group. Free publicity for all, just pay me...

Both companies have a bad name in New Zeland hence bringing her on to improve their image. Yeah right

As far as I can tell Noel Leeming is on a mission to improve their business: customer service, environmental impact, etc. The CEO has only been in the job for a couple of months, so he's got a big name on board to help him drive the change. Smart move. Obviously the big name in question is free to say what she wants, which is refreshing. Looking forward to seeing what Noel Leeming have planned: if this is the start I'm expecting big things from them.

ps: was reading the coverage on the herald and 70% of Kiwis thought the ad wasn't a problem...

Do you really think Erin needs the money? She must be loaded already so I don't imagine she'd be doing this unless she knew Noel Leeming were making the right commitments.

So here we finally have a large New Zealand company actually trying to look after the environment and community, not just chasing profits at any cost, and we're having a crack at them for it! I reckon it's great they're making an effort, unlike the rest of the retail market.
