Eskom shines light on energy conservation

Eskomad Nice billboard here from South African electricity company Eskom. Reminiscent of the “Use only what you need” billboards for Denver Water.

Er... ok.

I live in South Africa, for the last two months we have been having intermittent power cuts called "Load Shedding," certain areas of the country are blacked out for a few hours at a time to help prevent a complete nation wide blackout. Which makes sense. During this time everyone is told to turn off non essential appliances, turn off your water heater during the day etc.

And when a local news paper goes to the Eskom head office to do an interview about the load shedding schedule. They find that any and every light in the entire complex is turn on day and night.

Practice what you preach... ?

That's sort of the problem with these types of advertisements. Truth be told, there are very few companies out there that use conservation, environmental or 'green' advertising campaigns that actually put into practice what they try to portray to the public.

But, is it worth the risk of being "found out" to portray that image? It must be.

Or, you can save more money and not run the billboard at all.

They probably saved a ton of money by never even running a fake billboard.

How's the saying go? "It's not what you say...it's how you say it." Or wait, was it this one? "Don't say it. Show it."

This ad seems to fit the bill of these tried and true advertising maxims. Too bad it sounds like they don't practice what they preach. Then they coud've added another saying to their roster.

"Lead by example."

That's..."could've."

Stupid fingers.

"Or, you can save more money and not run the billboard at all."

---Sure, and then how does the ad agency make any money? How do creatives win awards? There are more important things to do than "saving" the planet.

This was obviously photoshopped. cam. Like most of the work done in south africa only for award shows. Why support showing cheat ads?

Seriously photoshopped. Look at the gradations in the gray on the board, and tell me if natural light has contrast rings that obvious.
