Fathead returns with more giant comedy

I may never actually buy a Fathead, one of those life-size, peel-and-place graphics of sports and entertainment stars (no matter how much my father-in-law would love a Papelbon). But the ads, by Wieden + Kennedy, are amusing. The latest one, which broke this weekend, features a 1,400-pound fire-breathing Kodiak bear dressed up in a triple-XXL-size Brian Urlacher jersey, and a deadpan spokesman who, in his rapture, begins rhyming about all the “Hall of Famers, ex-gamers, QB sackers, revitalized Packers” you can choose from. The earlier ads were good, too—the ones with the guy taking Fathead photos with the giant camera.

Good to see WK/NY doing something other than ESPN.

Bad to see they still think good writing (great, even) is the same as a good idea.

Yeah, going from ESPN to Fathead is a H-U-G-E departure.

I'd still take a spot in their next 12 class. Anybody from WK have news on that?

Great writing is still a good idea. Also no writing is still a good idea. Digital trickery is still a good idea. The right celebrity endorsement is still a good idea. Buying a spot on CSI is still a good idea. Anything that leaves an impact is a good idea. Remember, new is not always the measure of good. That said, puns are rareley if ever a good idea.

I totally agree with the great writing isn't a great idea thing. I love it, I laughed out loud even, but it still came off as a really fucking nice infomercial.

No-name guy, go to WK12.com and call one of the current students.

I would love to hear what you guys would define as a great idea. I would agree that it looks like an infomercial, but it is the original turn of phrase and thinking that make it great.

Let's not forget the viral nature of a piece *this* well-written.

I've personally spread it to dozens of people, put it up as my status message on Google Talk, and blogged about it, all because the writing makes this spot capable of appealing to basically anyone.

Anyone know the name of the actor in the fathead commercial with the bear?
