Sharpen your pencils, make some ‘live’ ads

Sol Interactive agency MediaFront in Norway has come up with an interesting campaign for Web portal SOL that puts copywriters in the hot seat. Three writers, working in shifts, monitor the Web sites where they’ve bought media placements—and from one hour to the next, they sketch on-the-fly ads that comment in some way on whatever the top story on each site happens to be. Using a custom-publishing tool, they can upload their “improvised” ads quickly after drawing them. MediaFront says it’s whipped up some 1,000 ads over a 150-hour period. (That’s a new ad every nine minutes.) It’s a neat idea, though the drawbacks are obvious: You don’t have time to make the ads look very pretty, and depending on a site’s top story, you might occasionally be at a loss for words. Wow. And you thought a sassy blog post or blog post comment might leave you in the hot seat at work. This could really put you on probation. I love it!

This is truly what it means to work with what you have. I don't think it could survive too long once the novelty wears off, but for generating interest and showing off innovative ideas, this is tops.

Dangit, when it comes to doodling ads copywriters aren't alone in the gig. Teams are doing the ads. Offended on the behalf of art directors everywhere.

(I tease because I lurve guys)

wow, that's a really interesting concept...I'd like to see it used on an American site and see how it comes out...

the writers will have to take care if it's on a major news site, but I'm thinking a place like The Onion would be perfect for something like that

Reading the responses, I really appreciate the positive comments and it's nice to see the positive feedback the campaign is getting. It has indeed been a very a cool project to work on. Our excellent copywriters write seriously funny jokes in Norwegian... Which will be translated to English shortly on the site.
