Activia tries to digest a consumer’s lawsuit

Activia Anyone who’s seen Activia’s ads knows they’re bizarre. But do they also make false health claims? Dannon, say it isn’t so! Attorney Timothy Blood (cool lawyer name) tells Brandweek: “Deceptive advertising has enabled Dannon to sell hundreds of millions of dollars worth of ordinary yogurt at inflated prices to responsible, health conscious consumers.” Dannon says Activia and DanActive aid digestion and boost immunity, but a new lawsuit by a client of Blood’s maintains there’s no evidence to support such claims and asks Dannon to issue $300 million in refunds. Now that I can make a few bucks off it, I’m running out and buying cases of the stuff. The ads always were a bit loose in most respects—sort of appropriate, considering the supposed health benefits of the brand in question. A Los Angeles court will now decide if they were loose with the facts as well.

I see that you’re writing about a lawsuit against Dannon and I wanted to take the opportunity to give you Dannon's position:

All of Dannon’s claims for Activia and DanActive are completely supported by peer-reviewed science and are in accordance with all laws and regulations. Dannon’s advertising has always been and will continue to be absolutely truthful, and Dannon will vigorously challenge this lawsuit.

I’m sure you’d like to hear both sides of the story, so I’d be happy to provide our press release, if that’s helpful. It's on our corporate website athttp://www.dannon.com/about_press.aspx

Activia has worked wonderful for me. No cramps and keeps me regulated. I buy it every week and will continue to. I was told about Activia buy my gastroenterologist.

Whether it works or not remains to be seen. I know this is the best tasting yogurt I have ever tried so I will continue to buy it.

I bought 12 of the 8 packs of Activia Bifidus Regularis to begin the 14 day challenge and to have extra to continue it. But I became ill. I was bloated, pain in my stomach, severly constipated for a solid week. I was miserable.I had to see my Primary physician for help. A week later I was talking to a neighbor who had gas severe stomach pains was off from work sick .while taking to her found out she too had eaten activia. This stuff is causing unusual suffering .It should be taken off the market It cost me $8.99 for a 8 pack .More than the other brand names .

after eating activia for only a short period of time, it has given me severe stomach pains, problematic toileting and made me sick

Posted by: donna | Apr 2, 2008 2:43:02 PM

Activia is NOT made with Bifidus Regularis, but instad with Bifidobacterium animalis. One way to tell that this is true is that Bifidus Regularis doesn't follow the rules of binomial nomenclature, but Bifidobacterium animalis does. SO Dannon is LYING like a monkey trying to get out of ass-rape!

This stuff made me very ill, I ate one dose, and was vomiting and had severe stomach pains now for 2 weeks, I'm glad I'm not the only one I just hope I recover soon

Posted by: sara | May 21, 2008 9:12:34 AM

I hate this yougurt. I have never had such severe stomach pains. I will NEVER buy this again.

Posted by: Jenny Smith | Jun 9, 2008 8:05:18 PM

I ate Activia for 2 weeks without a problem, but then took about a one week break from it and WOW, I have never been in such pain! I literally felt like I was dying. Severe cramps, abdominal bloating, constipation, sharp pains in my stomach area. I had to miss 2 days of work and even as it's my first day back I'm still experiencing some pain. I will NEVER take Activia again. You couldn't pay me $8.99 a spoonful to do so!

Posted by: Elisabeth | Jul 30, 2008 3:32:52 PM

I ate Activia for one week and became very ill from it and felt awful. Severe bowel problems, stomach ache, gas, bloating. I have been off it for a week and now have only begun to feel better. I will never buy it again.

I HATE THIS YOGURT TOO! My stomach feels like I have a BASKETBALL inside of it & I have terrible cramps and gas as well :(
Activia is NOT for me!!!

Posted by: Mary | Aug 7, 2008 11:53:40 PM

This stuff is making me sick to my stomach. After four days, I'm tossing the rest in the trash. I even wake up in the middle of the night with gas and bloating. My stomach and guts feel and look like a basketball. The rumbling, the bloating, the pain. It's constant, day and night. Big mistake for my body. Tastes great, but makes me feel terrible. It gives me the very same symptoms as when I take Erythromycin or eat 32-bean soup.

Posted by: anon e. mouse | Aug 20, 2008 11:54:26 AM

I have the same problem like most of you with Activia. I had it for two days (one a day) and after the first day, I have diarrhea. I didn't think of associating it with the yogurt so I continue the next day. And now it has been almost a week and I continue to have gas and sever abdominal cramp during bowel. The ad are so misleading and they need to have fine print that warn the consumer this yogurt is not all people. I have had other yogurt before but I never have this problem.

Just got back from doctor office. They ran $450 in blood tests and urine tests to tell me that Activia is likely the cause of an imbalance in my GI system. Severe cramping, bloating, and nausea for more than five days. They ended up giving me a shot to calm my nausea. I started eatting this stuff based on a recommendation from a friend. It tastes really good, but it turns out that it is poison in my stomach. I eat Brown Cow regularly and have never had anything this violent since last time I had food poisoning. Dannon should warn people that this may cause severe side effects.

Aqui estoy escribiendo y aun siguo with severe cramping!

I WIL NEVER EVER BUY THIS YOGURT IN MY LIFE!!!!

You guys are mad...I think all these posts are from one person. Comical.

Activia sounds like its a great product, but it has cause me nothing but pain. I am young, (27) healthy, active woman. I work out and eat well, however after a long trip, my digestive system was slow and had a hard time getting it back into the swing of things so to speak. So I tried activia and it did help with my digestion, but now 2 days after not eating it anymore I have really bad cramps, and a headache like no other. its not fun....I am currently having trouble eating because when I do its painful, i get really bad cramps. I know this is related to the activia and will not eat or buy it again. Activia is not a safe product as far as I am concerned. for some people yes great, but for me ouch...hope it ends soon.

Posted by: Jess | Apr 6, 2009 1:43:23 PM

Activia may help some people but not me. I have been eating it for 3 months and could not understand why I was so ill. Headaches, severe intestinal cramping, bloating, nausea, muscle pain, acid reflux. FINALLY, after my mother mentioned she was not buying it anymore because she was feeling so ill, I connected it. I thought this product was supposed to be good for you. I've gone to the doctor twice and they look at me like I'm nuts. No one could help. I haven't eaten any for 3 days and am starting to feel better. I can only hope this will go away. The thought of even seeing Activia in the grocery store makes me gag. They need to put warnings that this product is NOT for everyone. This could seriously kill someone if they had immune disorders.

Posted by: Darla | Apr 19, 2009 2:02:56 PM

I had been having an Activia every morning for breakfast. I was not having any intestinal problems, but thought this yogurt would help me to maintain a healthy intestinal tract. At first I noticed no problems. Over the course of a few weeks I became plagued with general health problems - horrible headaches primarily on the left side of my head, neck pain, stomach acid, bloat, fatigue, intestinal discomfort. I didn't make the connection to Activia until I ran out of it and didn't eat any of it for a few days. I was feeling somewhat better, but when I started eating Activia again -- the same problems returned. I began doing a little internet research and much to my surprise, learned there are others eating Activia who are having the same problems! Obviously, it helps some people, but seriously -- people should be made aware that it may cause overall health problems for some people.

In reading this, I see I am not the only one who got violently ill from Activia. Horrible pains, cramps, sweating, nausea, fatigue, bloating. I almost called 911 for an ambulance to the hospital. One little bottle of it and I am sicker than I can believe. There should be a warning label on this poison.

You peeps are killing me, have you not ever heard the saying "if its not broke dont fix it"? I mean hey your not an alcholic so it would be fine to start drinking 5 bottles of jack danials a day right? Here I sit looking fer some online help and possible aid to not takin a poop in a month, and I find you all talkin bout takin someone else's meds and not feeling well. WELL TRY NOT TAKIN A POOP FER A MONTH and get back with me. Someone tell me what will help me take a poop. Now then if you need anything furthur you will have to wait a bit cause i cant get it to come out

Posted by: fishpond40 | May 5, 2009 10:36:26 PM

My symptoms are the same as most of yours! Maybe this is why Activia is offering a money back guarantee... in hopes that people will get their few bucks back and go away quietly and suffer until this poison is out of their system!

Dear Fish Pond 40.

Re: your situation

Always add fiber slowly. Add some Benefiber, a little exercise (jumping jacks he he), drink water, some metamucil to bulk up, and temporarily some stool softener like colace.

You need to keep regular so you don't end up damaging your insides.

"Dieters tea" will do the trick, but drink only a couple watered down ounces (save the rest)...and it can cause pains. It has senna.

Begin adding ground flax seed to your food, try some steel cut oats, ... add some benefiber daily.

Trust me, having that stuff in your colon for long periods is not good. Good luck.

P.S. I love Activia.
But always take in moderation.
And I agree with Fish Pond 40, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

I'm another person feeling sick from Activia. I tried it once about 24 hours ago. At first it sent me to the bathroom to go a half hour after I ate it - which is good for me because I have constipation problems. However, a couple hours later I began to feel nauseous with a headache. Much worse by bedtime and I was sure I was going to throw-up, but I didn't. I'm still sick today though - I can't eat anything other than water and a few crackers. I DO have regularity issues and it still made me sick. I chose Activia in particular because I thought Jamie Lee Curtis seemed like a responsible person - involved with causes, helping children etc. - bad decision. Thank goodness I read others' experiences before I ate a second one. Thanks everyone! I'm going to look into other yogurts to see if any of them have an effect on regularity, and I will never take a bite of Activia again!

Posted by: Lucy | May 19, 2009 4:03:48 PM

I want to sue Activia! I was sick for several months, I lost my job, I was on edge of insanity! It was horrible! I am almost recovered, and my worst fear that it will come back--I had everything: diarrhea, fever, agitation and anorexia...I thought I was going to die!

Posted by: Y.W. | May 23, 2009 10:24:16 PM

IF YOU NEED A POOP... MY DR. RECOMMENDED FOR ME MIRALAX ONCE A DAY.

Posted by: Denise | Jun 5, 2009 2:48:58 PM

Activia should not be on the market. I couldnt pin point what has been causing me severe bloating and stomach pain. today after eating a whole box of this stuff thru out the week i realize that it was that activia. i thought this stuff was suppost to help with your digestion track , not screw with it!

Posted by: Holly | Aug 28, 2009 4:19:59 PM

I've had such cramps & bloating & sharp pains from Activia...it's the only thing I added new to my food intake...Thank goodness i've found these other responses, it makes me feel better already..
I guess the old rule holds true...if it's not broken, don't fix it!!! and I wasn't broken...now I am..how long till it goes away????

I recently bought two 4-packs of this product. I got one pack of the light strawberry and one pack of the light peach. I have had problems with constipation the last several years when perimenopause started, and more so after going through menopause. I thought after watching Jamie Lee on the commercials that this "natural" product may be good. Well....WRONG! I ate this two days in a row and I have been feeling really awful. Severe cramping, bloating, gas. I totally understand the feeling of having a basketball in the stomach!! It really does look that bad. After eating anything else, my stomach starts to churn and I am VERY uncomfortable. I also got the headache other people have described which I didn't think was from the yogurt at first. My husband even commented on how bad things are since it makes you even sicker to hold it all in! It occurred to me today it had to be the yogurt, and did a google search to find this forum. I have tried the fiber add ins (like Miralax), but I can't stand the slimy feel it puts in my drink, but at least it didn't cause this distress. Not all that is "natural" is good. I think Dannon needs to put a warning on the label. I am going to call them tomorrow, and return the product to my grocer and tell them this stuff is poison! I have a diabetic husband who suffers from diarrhea from his pills, and a teenage son with juvenile diabetes. There is no way I want them to eat this thinking it's good for them. It could be dangerous.

In response to Holly, it's been almost 48 hours since I at the second and last yogurt. I am still having problems, but not quite as bad. I have tried to drink more water to flush out the stuff more quickly. I hope you feel better soon!

A NOTE TO MICHAEL NEUWIRTH FROM DANNON - Of course I would expect you to defend Dannon on this product...that is what they pay you to do. I used to work in the PR department of a major company. If Dannon ignores these complaints and people continue to get sick, then it does become a huge problem for your company. Just because it's on the market doesn't mean it's safe for everyone. Hopefully, you will send these comments back to the appropriate department. Dannon needs to put warnings on this stuff. It's not just small side effects. They are debilitating for alot of people. I think your company is doing false and misleading advertising by not giving this information so consumers can make more informed choices. I, for one, will not buy another Dannon product again. I can get my store brand yogurt for much cheaper. It tastes great and doesn't cause these issues for me.

I plan to inform the FDA about my experience with this food product.

I drank the activia drink this morning and I feel horrible! :(

Posted by: Naf | Oct 8, 2009 1:47:23 PM

I just started using the Danactive on Thursday night and by Friday afternoon was home from work. I continued to use it until Monday because i associated my problems as food poisoning (severe constant cramps, nausea and dizziness due to the nausea, hard bloated stomach etc, same as the rest i have read). I stopped talking it yesturday and have already begun to feel better but i'm still not able to eat very much. i've been living off of toast the last few days because it's pretty much all my stomach can handle. now i have $10 dollars of yogurt in my fridge i can't eat.

Posted by: L.H. | Nov 3, 2009 8:42:22 AM

I started eating Activia on Sat. I woke up early Sun AM with severe pain in my lower abdomin which made me go to the bathroom. The following Sunday afternoon I ate another one for a snack. I did this for 4 days. The cramping was severe. It was so bad I actually couldn't move my bowels, pass gas, burp. When I coughed my belly hurt.I thought my insides were going to explode. I have been to the Dr. 2 times this week Monday and Wed. They gave me a pill to calm down my intestines which helped a little. Today is my second day off Activia and I still have lots of gas and cramping but not as much as I did on Mon. and Tues. Activia is the only thing new that was added to my diet. There should be some kind of warning labels on this product. I hope all of you on this post are feeling better. I can't wait to feel like myself again.

Posted by: Nina | Nov 26, 2009 3:54:12 PM

I had diarreah for 3 weeks. My Dr. ran tests of all sorts. NOTHING showed up. I started eating activia as well and like the rest of you I felt worse. I talked with an owner of a health food store, and he said there is something in it from mice intestines! He also said to stay away from it.

Posted by: Susan | Dec 12, 2009 3:50:44 PM

Wow, I found this post after Googling "Does Activia cause cramping" -- I've been having some issues with constipation due to pregnancy, and so I thought Activia would be perfect.

Instead, after 3 days of taking it, I've had the most debilitating stomach cramps ever -- so bad, that yesterday I had to walk around a little hunched/bent over, because it was a SHARP, STABBING pain in several places in my abdominal area.

I'm so glad I found this article to see that others are having the same problem. Of course, I feel like an idiot because I bought two 4-packs and they were not cheap.

The packaging really should warn people about the risk of intense abdominal cramping and painful bloating.

Shame on you, Danon!
