Target board is deemed ‘sexualized ad slop’

Target_2 Pencil me in among the legions of people offended by this Target billboard in Times Square, featuring a woman lying spread-eagle on a giant bull’s-eye. Lisa Ray, founder of Parents for Ethical Marketing, says she “could not understand how anybody making an ad would put that together and not have one person in the room say, ‘Wait a minute.’ ” I agree. All those winter clothes get in the way of what could be a very titillating campaign. ... What’s that? Oh, sorry. I guess the problem is the ad is too suggestive—one blogger calls it “sexualized ad slop.” It probably would have looked better in the old Times Square. Photo by Bennett 4 Senate.

Oh come on. Only a total prude would be offended by this ad - or someone who is looking to be offended. The Target bullseye is so commonplace it no longer suggests an actual bullseye. And this woman's pose is clearly playful, like she's making a snow angel. Some people just like to be offended I guess, but this is ridiculous.

The moment I saw it, I thought to myself "her vagina is the target." But the ad itself is innocent, it's people that see sexual things into it. We don't go around banning signs that say "3-way" just because it reminds some people of sex. Frankly, if the ethical marketing people don't like they, they're free to stop shopping there. What I hate is a minority of people speaking for all consumers.

I guess they will go after Loonette from the children's show "Big Comfy Couch" next.

Heaven forbid her trying to teach kids how to tell time because she's using a round carpet as a clock and her hands and feet to mark out the hours.

Posted by: manavision | Jan 16, 2008 10:36:51 AM

I have a carpet in my living room that has conentric circles that tessalate. I place little toddlers on that carpet and take pictures.

My mind didn't go there to the uh-oh zone.

However, I read a childhood verse poem from Robert Louis Stevenson's garden book and I was astonished. So much for reading children the good books. That is an adult book. Believe me.

what does `tessalate'' mean?

Posted by: Blippety McBlipp | Jan 16, 2008 12:17:50 PM

This is a ‘non-story’ to me, and I’m the one that wrote it initially before the media turned it into a hype fest in Mn!

Sheesh. I wish we’d either elevate the dialog to a much larger context of objectification/ambient advertising and the impact on pop culture, or bury this in the circular file of corporate idiocy and customer service blunders to learn from.

I simply sourced it from AdRants, called attention to the normalization of objectification (sexualized ad slop) in ambient advertising (and yes, this is MILD by comparison to the stuff I usually cover along these lines) but I was surprised that a ‘family firm’ would choose to play the 'cluelessly crass’ ad card to post a 20 X 20 Times Square crotch shot sans context.

When I called to fact-check/query for campaign context/motivation, I was dissed as being ‘non-traditional media’ with an unsigned e-form response…THAT to me is the news story here. Objectification overall is a worthy discussion, but not this one ad. That's minutiae.

Plus it trivializes the larger issue of ambient advertising/objectification by pulling the issue out of context to make it seem like 'parenting crazies' are 'over-reacting.' Unfair, imho to dilute the dialog into a one-off 'debate'...

Out of thousands of our posted topics (using the power of media for positive change) Twitter fundraising to send orphans to college in 24 hours, Age of Conversation 103 bloggers raising $11K for Variety, the global children's charity) worthy eco-sites, kids interactives, nutrition, and counter-marketing/media literacy programs for kids, THIS is the blog post that gets pulled for 'mainstream media' attention?

As I said to one of the Minnesota blogs, what a shame. What a loss. What a lousy target. sigh. Now back to our regular programming…;-)

tessalate?

Do you wear birkenstocks?
I'd suggest you step in the snow with them. Look at them like you were on drugs or something. Examine your soleprint.

Answered. check!

Explaining that so turned me on that i went out in the snow, danced around in barefeet, and drew a picture of a narcissus with my feet

"Sexualized ad slop"? Some people have too much time in their hands.

Posted by: Somebody | Jan 16, 2008 2:17:12 PM

Nancy, what's your address? I have some decaf with your name on it.

Posted by: AdScribe | Jan 16, 2008 3:41:02 PM

Hell, i just dunked my english breakfast tea in my milk for one second.

I needed the tannins to attack those proteins.. not the caffeine.

Am i really spinning out of control. I contend that I can lose weight by thinking. I don't want to be obese and i am trying to fit in the wool sweater that, honey, I shrunk in the dryer. And I also can get full by thinking about it. And taste really good food that isn't even there. and... and...and... and...and... and...

Oh hell, if I give you my exact geographcial latitude and longitude will you just ask the sun to shine a bit more. I don't care if it's cold. Heck snow is even better sparkling in the sun shine.

Will you also promise not to sell that info or steal it or copy it or do anything with it besides keep it under control?

I need to check with a lawyer before doing anything on these boards.

leave me a message on any video.

Go to my flickr site same id and leave me a message.

forget lawyers and everything else.

I live in Columbus Ohio. Go to the Marriot off I-65 (west off the exit) Tell you what you may think I'm crazy but I've been cut off from just about everything. My cell phone doesn't even work at the Marriot. either ATT or Telecom.I accuse somebody of tampering with it. I can't make calls out on the landline, and well if you send that decaf, I will stop by the marriot everyday on the way to the supermarket and pick it up whenever it comes. Tell the guy at the desk to look for the old chick who asked about att reception at the hotel and who said they get that service there. Just let me know so I know I am not f*in crazy about getting in touch with the outside world.

Posted by: Nancy | Jan 16, 2008 9:55:32 PM

Sorry columbus indiana. That guy stuck in complete oblivion, Columbus, Ohio lives a parallel life with me. Perhaps I should head for the border.

Posted by: nancy | Jan 16, 2008 9:57:21 PM

Didn't think about it, when I saw it. I guess I'm not a total perv.

Posted by: thatguy | Jan 16, 2008 10:07:01 PM

I thought of davinci art, when I first saw it but there was no square. See cavemen ad on adpulp or adrants. I also was dressed like that girl when I went to the apple store to replace my power chord that I'm also alittle suspicious about.

Posted by: | Jan 16, 2008 10:19:47 PM

This reminds me of that old joke about the guy taking the Rorschach test and he sees sex in every image he is shown. The psychiatrist tells him he has too much sex on his mind> "Me?", he says. "You're the one with all the dirty pictures!"

I agree with Bobby. The ad is innocent. It's people who see the sex there.

Posted by: Woody Hinkle | Jan 17, 2008 9:29:28 AM

Can someone tell me why this is newsworthy?

Posted by: Nomar | Jan 17, 2008 3:56:17 PM

it's not newsworthy, but at least it got the sun to shine today.

i mean there could be no other correlation.

The person is slowly getting used to cars, mostly to the news, which are tied with the past. Either it is its manufacturer or it is its design but they have something in common. Nowdays, as concerns "alived" cars, they are mostly sport cars. The "Fathers" of today?s followers was somehow special for their age, they had something inside themselves what is alived to this times. Why had it been constructing cars which have their rootes in 50-ties, 60 –ties and 70 – ties. People know how to honour this jewel which survives even 50 years and therefore these cars are so exceptional. What do the years 1968-1973 and 2006 have in common? The only one thing, the collocation Opel GT!

Hello,

While I was aimlessly browsing yesterday night, I came across a dating site, which had profiles
from my country/state.
I registered for free with them.

Btw, the site was http://datesandcams.com

Within half hour or so, I was able to get in touch with 10-15 girls within my locality.
I could not believe this.
I got hooked with some of the pretiest girls, whom I would never dare to aproach directly.

What I want to know is, how are the promoters of this site, able to provide service for free?

I wouldnt mind paying for such a great site too.

IESB is reporting that Tom Cruise's upcoming film, about an attempted assassination of Hitler at the height of WWII, will begin its second leg of filming in Southern California.
Everyone knows that the project was shooting in Germany and all the drama that followed. But that production has left the country and Bryan Singer is prepping to shoot the opening of the movie in California's desert locations, which are meant to be parts of North Africa.
Casting for extras is expected to start soon and filming is expected to start within the next few weeks and wrap by the first week of March. Recently, "Valkyrie" has been pushed back from its summer release and is now scheduled to hit theaters on October 3rd.
