Liberty Mutual buying Paul Tilley keywords

Tilleygoogle Lord knows there was plenty of discussion, some of it fruitful and much of it not, about the role of ad-industry blogs in DDB executive Paul Tilley’s suicide. I have no desire to rehash any of it. But interestingly enough, Liberty Mutual would very much like to keep the conversation going. The Tribble Ad Agency blog notes that the insurance company is buying Google ads on terms like “Paul Tilley” to promote a “Death by Blog” post on the Tilley subject that it published on its “Responsibility Matters” blog. The Liberty Mutual post rehashes a lot of the news coverage surrounding the posts on AgencySpy and elsewhere prior to Tilley’s suicide. Liberty’s “Responsibility Project” just launched, but it will be interesting to see how far a staid insurance company goes in addressing hot-button issues.

What a sad and pathetic attempt by Liberty Mutual to get itself attention. The people pontificating about this tragedy are arguably worse than any allegedly deadly bloggers. First, Liberty Mutual spreads unsubstantiated rumors by claiming Tilley’s friends insist blogs played a significant role in the event. Can someone please reveal the evidence to support this contention? The New York Times ran a story that included, “But a colleague and friend of Mr. Tilley’s, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, ‘There’s no way you or I will know why he did this, but it’s certainly not because of blogs.’” So where did Liberty Mutual get its material? Why, from anonymous comments left on blogs. Brilliant.

Unless you’re officially investigating this event—or you’re a Tilley family member—what value is gained by examining things further? Liberty Mutual is engaging in a highly insensitive and disrespectful act. Coming from an insurance company, it’s also patently obscene. Is this an example of Liberty Mutual’s responsibility policy? If so, everyone should steer clear and go for Allstate, State Farm, GEICO and Aflac instead.

It will be a cold day in hell before I EVER buy any kind of insurance or anything else from Liberty Mutual and this particular story is certainly worthy of re-telling. Happily, it may also turn off other potential consumers...which obviously was not the intent. What a bunch of ignorant fools to come up with such an ill-conceived concept. It's also so incredibly out of touch and totally out of date with any kind of on-line "messaging." Irreverant, attention-getting concepts/ads may have worked years ago off-line but they sure as hell do NOT work on-line. I agree with the previous commentator: It IS patently obsecene!

Brian...
This is so pathetic. The person who dreamt this up should be taken behind the woodshed and shot. On the other hand, perhaps I could sell them a banner ad on AdScam for $100 K. No fuck them!

George,
Feel honored. You are a key part of Liberty Mutual's targeted media plan. It hasn't bought "George Parker" yet, though Smith Barney has. (Are you a financial advisor too?) What I'm interested in is the pickle brands will get themselves into as they try to shift to creating "content" and "conversations." The problem with both is that you can make enemies. Think of all the frightful topics Liberty Mutual could address under this "Responsibility" theme. It could get uncomfortable pretty fast.

Paul Tilley's father died in a house fire down in Austin around a year ago, hence his mental malaise. Not, "mommy they made fun of me". ANYONE who works in advertising and can't take the barbs is like an Icelander who hates darkness. In the wrong fucking place. Can douchenozzle.com be far behind?

It’s ironic that one of Tilley’s last projects at DDB was overseeing the new campaign for State Farm Insurance. It makes Liberty Mutual’s actions all the more obscene. Liberty Mutual is using Tilley in a project that’s clearly designed to build their brand—yet it’s unlikely Tilley would ever have approved such a move, as he was quite loyal to the clients he serviced.
