Absolut ad redraws the U.S.-Mexico border

Absolut An Absolut ad from Mexico City that shows Mexico taking over a large portion of the United States? Oh, that’s not going to go over well up here. Not at all. And sure enough, it isn’t. “Absolut-ly outrageous,” says Jim Hoft of Gateway Pundit. “Absolut-ly insulting,” adds Brian Ledbetter. (At least they’re not so enraged that they forget to pun on the Absolut name.) Rather than complain, Patrick Ishmael over at The News Bucket whips up his own altered map, on which Absolut’s homeland of Sweden gets totally hosed by Finland. UPDATE: Under pressure, Absolut has now apologized for the ad.

That's pretty friggin' stupid to get upset about. Mexico USED TO OWN all that territory. America bought/stole a bunch of it in a little affair called the Mexican-American War. Remember?

From a business perspective, it doesn't matter if it's "stupid to get upset about." The really dumb move was Absolut alienating a larger market with their advertising in a smaller market. Especially in the Internet Age.

Being half Finn, I'm a big fan of Patrick Ishmael's map making skills. And Finlandia vodka is better anyway.

Posted by: Exurban Jon | Apr 4, 2008 1:07:37 PM

Look, there's a bunch of people trying to cross over into Washington state.

Posted by: | Apr 4, 2008 1:39:59 PM

@Exubran Jon - I suppose you're right. But still, the ranting and raving is all hyper-political which annoys me.

Posted by: Mark Schoneveld | Apr 4, 2008 2:58:13 PM

Guys It's only an ad, don't get upset so easily. By the way, the ad is so viral.

Posted by: John Dickey | Apr 4, 2008 3:06:44 PM

By the way, the ad is so viral.

er, that's not always so good, especially since vodka is a colorless, tasteless product 100% dependent on ads. And this ad is radioactive.

It hit Drudge today as well. Oops.

Hello people the Swedish are famous for pissing people off. Free Speech and all it still works. I'm a 3rd generation American, my family came from Mexico 80 years ago. As a patriot, this pisses me off. Mexicans come here because it's NOT Mexico. Mexico sucks! Also, learn some history morons. You can't be incomplete about the history just so you can bash the U.S. We "won" the land from Mexico, in war. Who in turn "won" it from Spain, again in war. Who in turn raped the indigenous folk in more than one way of the land in slaughter and genocide.

I guess you could say in an a truly "ABSOLUT" world, that wouldn't be Mexico, bu t Navajo Nation and Hopi Nation, etc.

Forgive the rant, I have nothing better to do at work.

Posted by: Mr. Rob | Apr 4, 2008 4:08:26 PM

Since when did it became insulting to depict historically correct maps? Grow up!

By the way, it's a Mexican ad agency who came up with the idea of showing a historically correct map of Mexico in the
Absolut ads.

Posted by: Peter | Apr 6, 2008 7:01:03 AM

Seriously why does everyone gets so upset over this? It's an ad for vodka, not to be taken seriously from the get go, plus there are so many other issues out there that people could be pissed about... it boggles the mind... that people are choosing to be mad about an ad in some other country that is no threat to U.S. what so ever. Mexicans have their own version of history and so do we, thats life.

Posted by: Chimbles | Apr 6, 2008 12:37:07 PM

To Peter:

The map depicted in the Absolut ad is not "historically accurate." That formation never occurred in history.

It is a modern map with redrawn borders to grant Mexico the Southwestern United States.

It is offensive because it states that in an Absolut or "perfect" world, the Southwestern United States would be part of Mexico. As a resident of the Southwestern United States and a visitor to Mexico, I can assure you that I would never want Mexico governing my state.

Have a sense of humor people. It's not like this a cartoon of Muhammad or anything.

Why do americans are getting so thin-skinned about everything?
This is only an ad, that only shows a 1830 geopolitical situation for the time.
Imagine for one moment all the people of Russia or France getting pissed of every time a documentary in Germany showing maps of the world war 2, when a part of Russia and France still belonged to germany??

If Mexicans dont get so sensitive about seeing the actual USA map, if Spanish dont get mad when they see actual South America map, why do americans have to make an issue out of everything??

And it's the same when it comes to things like lebron james and bundchen vogue photo that shocked a lot of people last week...Other countries citizens get to manage better that situations and doesn't get so thin-skinned about everything. The result... less racism in their countries.

What small-minded people you are over there in the US.

Posted by: Rob | Apr 9, 2008 11:24:49 AM

I can't help but think of the scene from Roland Emmerich's cinematic bomb "The Day After Tomorrow" where all the Americans were scrambling to get over the border into Mexico...

Posted by: Kurre | Apr 10, 2008 10:52:45 AM

Thank you Absolut for giving me an excuse to buy Finlandia, or Skyy (made in the USA). I was not vodka-political before now.

Posted by: Yorick | Apr 12, 2008 10:20:13 AM

To the 'skin-thinned' comments, have you ever lived in the US? Aside from the ignorance you display when you assume that all Americans are "thin-skinned", you wouldn't know why these seemingly small issues are seen as big deals here - because you don't live here!

If you did live here, you would understand that decades of bombardment from illegal immigration, racism, and many other social issues have made the citizens in the US very sensitive about them. Since you don't have to deal with these issues DAILY, you wouldn't and obviously can't possibly understand why Americans seem "thin-skinned" when something like this Absolut add goes public - so get off your high horse and stop thumbing your nose you ignorant dolts.

A good part of that land was disputed BECAUSE it was sold to the U.S. by France (which controlled ALL of the Mexican Territory at the time; why not claim Louisiana also?) in a little thing called the Louisiana Purchase, which was completely legal. Texas Independence was not dependent on the U.S. war with Mexico and was an entirely separate event. This map exceeds the territory Mexico held and is intended to inflame Mexican feelings of hatred and resentment against the U.S., and is of course offensive. IF Mexico had actually held all of that territory, where would one go to escape the corruption and genocide that mark Mexican politics? The U.S. would not be the power it became, the Nazi's would have won, and Finland may well have turned against Sweden (or the Nazis from Norway) after the defeat of the Soviet's turning Sweden into Poland. Ah, in an Absolut world indeed! What pigs!!!

Posted by: Robert | Apr 15, 2008 10:54:03 AM

Either you had to much Absolut and therefor see the delusional map or you are so petty that you get upset about the map and need to drink some Absolut. Get a life! Please!!

Posted by: BillyBob | Apr 15, 2008 11:57:47 AM

In the mind of most Mexicans, USA *stole* half Mexico's territory in the first half if 19th century. That *is* a fact, let's not bash it away.

How come they get offended at this map? They have the territory!

By the way: as far as I know, America is *not* the name of a country. Monroe is dead, very very dead! America is the name of the whole continent, whether USA people likes it or not.

come people...mexico was ripped off.....santa ana sold the land at gun point............

Posted by: mexican to the max | Jun 24, 2008 12:09:50 AM

one day....mexico will reclame his land....and that day will come sooner than later....theres already 80% mexicans in cali, texas, new mexico arizona, and many more....including colorado.....not many people know that colorado was a mexican state!!!!...and remember.....the roman empire didnt last for ever!!!

Posted by: mexican assasin | Jun 24, 2008 12:14:32 AM

in regards to yorik....you sound as ignorant as your comment. why do people blame everything on mexicans.everyone seems to mention mexicans as being the only illegals..what about the illegal africans, puertoricans, asians japanese, chinese, arminians, ithiopians, italians, jews, israelis, and many more ethnic groups........and also dont forget the americans.....this land belongs to the indians....if i was the pres, of mexico, i would demans for all americans to get a visa.a.k.a. greencard to enter mexican soil.

Posted by: mexican assasin | Jun 24, 2008 12:22:40 AM

crap
I don't want to mention the name of the f*cker that kidnapped Santa Anna and tortured him to sell the half of México...
but..be objective...USA stole that because he killed their heroes in Alamo War...
USA wanted to the people of Mexico hate Santa Anna but some of us see Santa Anna as a heroe because he know that if he didn't sell that part of Mexico, USA will attack Mexico and they will take the whole country...
try to read a little bit

****************
...have made WHITE citizens in the US very sensitive about them

There. Fixed that for ya'.

IMO: In an Absolut world, America wouldn't exist. It is a bastard country that was made by stealing land from some countries and warring for the rest. Then we go and say it's 'illegal immigration' for the people we stole it from to come here? Bullshit I tell you. Total bullshit. About the only part we got properly was Alaska. Sorry Inuits!
Mexico still ranks higher than America *ever* will on my favourite country list.
Go Mexico. Go Absolut.
also: yes, all Americans *are* thin skinned and the majority are so closed minded I'm surprised they learn *anything*.

Posted by: CommieGirl | Apr 1, 2009 5:03:08 PM

You know, every country in the world wouldn't exist without conquest and empire building. It's a sad fact, but it is absolutely true. Mexicans aren't the indigenous owners of the S.West U.S.A. Seriously? Read your history-- Mexicans have a lot of European in them, just like Americans. That territory held by Mexicans was held for less than 70 years-- and was obtained from Spain! Where did Spain get it? The U.S.A. has now held it for more than twice as long as Mexico had it. Look at a world map-- didn't always look that way. It's ridiculous to say Americans are illegal-- what a joke. Everyone in the world is then illegal if you go far back enough. The truth is, illegal aliens in the U.S.A. are causing everyone a certain amount of grief. The truth is, there is a movement trying to repopulate the U.S. with Mexicans who I suppose think that this country will remain prosperous with Mexican politics running it-- what a joke. And to the people who say, "Get a life" I agree to a certain point-- but seriously, people are upset about this because they are generally somewhat educated about the economic mess here which is somewhat attributed to anchor babies and the healthcare/welfare of many illegal aliens. It's a genuine concern and ads like this, while catering to the masses who don't know their history (and think they do) and are living less than ideal lives economically, are not only salt on an ever-gaping wound, but are not productive toward helping any of us out. They breed ignorance. So should I get a life? No-- Absolut should get a life.

Posted by: seanettlesoup | Apr 15, 2009 12:47:30 PM

Actually, sorry-- it was more like 27 years that Mexico held that territory. Incidentally, the Mexican-American "war" was a disgusting period (among many) in United States history. Nevertheless, you look at a globe and nearly every single westernized country (Mexico included) has equally imperialist outlooks. Great Britain, France, China, Russia, Germany-- they all have shameful periods of intervention and theft in their histories. It's part of the appeal of power, I suppose. Anyhow, it's foolish to say that Americans are illegals in the U.S. You might as well claim that we should all go back to Mesopotamia from whence we came. I'm sure the Iraqis would love that.
