Amnesty crafts grim anti-waterboarding ad
The water sure looks pretty in this U.K. commercial from Amnesty International, until it hits the prisoner’s face. Amnesty rep Kate Allen tells the Daily Telegraph: “Our film shows you what the CIA doesn’t want you to see—the disgusting reality of half-drowning a person then calling it ‘enhanced interrogation.’ ” Read more at unsubscribe-me.org. You're right. So much better to dress up in an orange jumpsuit and have your head sawed off on YouTube.

america has been reduced to acting like medieval tyrants. osama bin laden's victory is complete. how did that happen.
can this country ever get ANYTHING right? just once would be nice. finding osama would be a good start.

Like three people have been waterboarded. Think Amnesty should take a closer look at the real torturers.

it's not the number, it's the priniciple. civilized nations don't torture people. saudi arabia does. this administration has disgraced us with their fearmongering and incompetence. quite aside from the fact that torture doesn't work, it's un-American. we used to be the good guys. not anymore. now we're the mediocre guys.
osama, whereever he is, must be delighted that he's dragged us down to his level of barbarism.

Yeah, right.
You're either naive, or delusional.

My only issue with this ad is that it isn't running in the US. And it has been documented and even admitted that military and civillian laws were violated during the war on terror and that was ok cuz it was the war on terror so the ad isnt too far fetched.

Dont want to be waterboarded?
Dont kill Americans
Dont kill American soldiers
Dont be a terrorist
Dont be an Islamo-Facist
Violate these and you better learn to breath under water.

No, i'm not naive or delusional. America is simply repeating the mistakes made by other countries who have battled terrorists. the most conspicuous being that they have done exactly what osama hoped they would: they over-reacted. and gave the terrorists exactly what they wanted - attention and endless publicity. we even gave them a chance to shoot at us in their own backyard. that was stupid.
Suspending habeas corpus, interning suspects without trial in concentration camps which serve as terrorist universities and create martyrs of the innocent. and, yes, torturing suspects. we're not the first to make these mistakes.
a relative of mine was once tortured by soldiers who suspected him of being a terrorist. he wasn't one. but being tortured spurred him to join a terrorist group. that's what torture does.
effective intelligence gathering is better than torture at combatting terrorism.
but that takes brains and effort and a long term strategy. things that are very clearly in short supply in the current USA administration.

* Ask anyone in CIA/intelligence community: torture is a rotten way to get info. people say anything under torture to make the torture stop
** the most effective torture is depriving people of sleep. after as little as 30 hours, they can be utterly broken down. even the strongest, toughest types can't stand it for more than 60-70 hrs. max.
*** simple test: if you'd beg someone not to do it to you, it's torture. that's not to say there might not be consequences if torture isn't used
.. big big questions ... always make me feel so small

I wonder if the guy in the video survived Amnesty's waterboarding.

Does anyone else get the feeling that the U.S.A. is becoming (or has become) the new Soviet Union?
Posted by: Hmm | Apr 26, 2008 3:20:33 AM
p.s. In a figurative sense.

oh we became the new soviet union some time ago.
Futile endless occupation of Afghanistan? check
Crumbling economy? check
Crushing military expenditure? check
Disregard for human rights? check
Despotic out of touch leadership? check
Obsession with surveillance and secrecy? check
America is in deep trouble. But the really alarming part is that most Americans seem blissfully unaware of much the country has changed. Or the extent of the decline. America's capacity for denial is endless apparently.
