'Will It Blend?' guy shifts to ice-cream ads

Tom Dickson found Internet fame with his "Will It Blend?" product-demonstration videos, in which he crushes, mixes, purees and liquifies various household items with his heavy-duty invention, the Blendtec blender. Now, Tom is taking his act into other companies’ commercials. In the spot above, he makes a rather non-sequiturous appearance for Dibs ice-cream snacks, as he attempts to blend giant lollipops covered in back hair.

Mars and Wrigley? Sure both chewy and gooey and both clients.

So the way to get us to pay attention to this brand is to do a gross-out gag, bring in an internet-famous guy we may be familiar with, and staple it to the TV spot?

While that technique does trigger the correct brain memory buttons, the creative thought behind it is freshman. This spot leaves the viewer with a sense of some connection between a snack and backhair stuck to lollipops. Why not come up with a concept that would actually communicate what the product and brand are about?

I really, really like this ad. I spent the first half wondering why on earth she was holding a gigantic lollipop and the second lovin' the Tom Dickson. He truly is my homeboy. It brings about in me a good attitude towards Dibs, which had dumb gimmick with crappy packaging written all over it on my mental branding card. but the crunching sound she made as she ate those chocolate covered ice cream snacks really communicated tasty to me. The back hair did not cause issue for me. Back hair removal is funny, but it would be fine without it, but not without Tom. without Tom, it looks too a lot like one of those old skittles ads.

were you trying to make a funny with the last name? I now own up to every single comment I make with first and last name. 28 years with this last name and no one has ever made a comment or insult with it, like you just ""succeeded. Usually, they look at it and try and pronounce it with their very best high school German. I always smile at them for trying, Most get it quite right. And it isn't even my name. And I am not even German. It's called commanding respect from each other, I guess, by a feeling of being in each other's presence.

If the comment was not at all meant for me and I am just showing my excessive need to be recognized, please void recognition of this comment.

And I do apologize for not doing my homework. Dibs is from Nestlé and not governed by Edelman PR as Mars and Wrigley are. I think Publicis does Nestlé PR. That of course may or may not have anything to do with its advertising agency for dibs, or how does that work?

does anyone know who the guy sitting on the car in this commercial is? He looks so familiar, I swear he was in a movie or TV show recently. It's driving me nuts!!
