50 Cent is frankly disgusted by Taco Bell

50cent Taco Bell's president, Greg Creed, the guy who sends gushy, publicity-seeking letters to Paris Hilton, has struck again. This week, he’s apparently been trying to get 50 Cent to change his name to 79 Cent, 89 Cent or 99 Cent for a day to promote the chain’s value meals—and then rap a lunch order, using the revised currency when referring to himself. In return for all this, Taco Bell promised $10,000 to a charity of Fiddy’s choice. “We know that you adopted the name 50 Cent years ago as a metaphor for change,” Creed reportedly wrote. “We at Taco Bell are also huge advocates for change. ... We encourage you to ‘Think outside the bun’ and hope you accept our offer.” The offer was not accepted. A rep for the rapper called the invitation a “sleazy and ill-conceived publicity stunt,” and Fiddy himself added, “When my legal team is finished with them, Taco Bell is going to have a new slogan: ‘We messed with the bull and got the horns!’ ”

this is where you donate your own $10 000 to charity and be sure to publicly state how much you hate the taste of sub-quality tacos.

Why would Taco Bell want to team up with 50 Cent? Is the fast food joint not satisfied with the rapping performances in their campaign of drive-thru wiggers?

I understand the annoyance of 50 cent. They are profiting from his celebrity whether he agrees to the request or not. There is a very good chance that Taco Bell will pay a great deal for this stunt. My guess is 50 cent is going to go for whatever money he would receive for an endorsement. They will probably use his Vitamin Water agreement as a basis for the damages sought.

This is why Madison Avenue needs more Black people on agency boards and in boardrooms and creating ads. This could not have been a more ignorant stunt. I'm embarrassed for Taco Bell, asking a bum bang-bang shoot 'em up wack rapper whose 15 minutes of fame has passed. And for the wackness of their products in general. Actually maybe the two sides are made to be together cause they both lack gusto.

I can hear Sargeant Hulka: Lighten up, 50 Cent.

If 50 cent had any sense of humor or street smarts he would have challenged Creed to legally change his last name to Nickleback, Hoobastank, or Godsmack for a donation of $100,000 to his favorite charity.

Re: "I'm embarrassed for Taco Bell, asking a bum bang-bang shoot 'em up wack [sic] rapper whose 15 minutes of fame has passed."

The joke was a play on his name, of course, and not because they imagined he would be a reputable or "authentic" spokesperson for the brand. Unless I missed something that connects 50 Cent (or 50 Cents, as my high school English teacher called him) to unappetizing tacos, Taco Bell's campaign attempt is not grounded in anything of substance. Foolish fast food.

I like Tom K's idea.

Doesn’t this set a bad precedent when someone can get sued over a 'possible' concept though?

Unless I missed something, (and forgetting the issue of whether the concept is good or not), a brand proposed an idea to a client–Fiddy in this case—basically a campaign that never went further, let alone even ran, and he hates it enough to sue?

Does this mean then that gay rights activists can sue Snickers for that Super Bowl spot that actually DID run? Or even if another group gets wind of a proposed spot they find offensive?

It was intentionally sent out to get publicity. It has nothing to do with a concept that you think up in your office. If you want to use 50 cent in a campaign, you call his management and make a deal. You don't send a letter to a bunch of news outlets. This was someone trying to be clever and capitalize on Fiddy's fame without paying him.

Technically, gay rights groups could have sued Snickers. You can pretty much sue for anything. They probably would not have won though. However, it is important to remember that Freedom of Speech laws only apply to "Free Speech." We work in the world of "Paid Speech." There are regulations governing what we can and cannot say.

parde: 50 cent's last album did very well, and resulted in some of the biggest mainstream chart hits of 2007/2008. i don't think his 15 minutes are up.

@thatguy-
Sure, but libel and slander laws apply to all speech, paid or free. People who sue don’t care how the slight happened—they just want their $$$.

;-p

thatguy,

Gay rights groups probably could not have sued Snickers. Lawsuits require showing some sort of financial loss or damage. Snickers didn’t damage audiences. Offend, yes. Damage, no.

50 cent needs to get over himself. Just like how a couple of months he said he would stop rapping if Kanye West outsold him. Kanye won, fankly I was hoping he would live up to that. But on this Taco Bell thing, they didn't mean any harm, and they were actually going to do some good with it. I don't understand why he's so mad about it.
