Smart Car unmoved by the Gas Can Blues

Gascanblues Jung van Matt in Hamburg, Germany, produced this evocative and memorable spot for Smart Car. Those lonely and discarded gas cans sure have the blues. No wonder, since the vehicle gets 40 miles per gallon. Their “faces” are pretty expressive, though they bear more than a passing resemblance to the head statues on Easter Island. There’s a waiting list of several months in the U.S. for the Smart Car, so it’s easy to share the pain. These sounds and images would work on that Moodstream site, if the toggles could be set for “expensive” and “empty.” And Gas Can McGee would be a cool name for a grizzled old blues singer, wailing at the pump and breaking for a harmonica solo as the price continues to spiral toward $5.

Personifying an object that has become lonely/depressed/angry because of the fact it has been made obsolete by a new product is an old trick that has lost its freshness and effectiveness.

don't really get the hype around this spot. it's mildly entertaining and not all that original. plus, the imagery of the gas can seems so dated.
