My first thought when viewing that commercial was, "OMGWTFBBQ?!? Hillary Duff is GAY?"
Is that wrong?
Seriously, though. This campaign reminds me of the old egg-cracking "This is your brain on drugs" ads. All the pot-heads would see that while stoned and think "Dude! Waffle House would be SO awesome right now!"

when people use gay as pejorative it really annoys me but man these ads are pretty lame. I can see the kids that they’re targeting refer to them as gay.

That's so hetro.

I think anti-"calling things gay when you mean 'stupid'" forces should go all reverse discourse on this problem. Either appropriate the word "gay" and change its meaning, or attempt in some way to distance "gay" from "homosexual."
It really bothers me when people call things "gay" in lieu of "bad/stupid." My usual response: "So, you think that movie likes to have sex with other movies of the same gender? Is that what you're saying?"

You know how I learned to stop saying 'gay' in that regard? Going to a liberal college where, if someone overheard you say it, he'd kick your ass.

This is so gay.
Posted by: Tony Jones | Oct 8, 2008 4:15:16 PM
so is "That's so retarded" still allowed?
Posted by: Terry | Oct 8, 2008 4:54:11 PM
... there was an issue with "that's so gay"? People that have problems with that need to quit with the political correctness bull. "That's so gay" is disjointed from homosexual-gay just like homosexual-gay is disjointed from happy-old-fashion-gay. Where are the people to complain about that?
It's just a word. Words get raped all the time. If people have enough issues with it too kick someone's ass over it then that's just retarded.
;D

It seems like a watered down, teen version of the "natural reaction" "one voice" anti-racism ads that also went too far...that being said...the commonization of hate speech (yes this only covers hompophobic speech but the N word is just as much a problem, in a different way) is disturbing and it IS time something is done about it...and yes "that's so gay" is a major issue and one that is way too tolerated.
(although im surprised no one made a Lohan joke ;))

Uhm. Does no one remember that gay used to not mean homosexual, but happy?
Let's run ads telling people to stop using gay to reference homosexuals. Using words for any but their original intended meaning is insulting. By the way, don't use "fun" as an adjective. It's only supposed to be a verb.
Language can never, ever change.
Fucking ridiculous.
Sometimes words are just words.
Words take on new meaning over time. If I call something gay as a pejorative, it has nothing to do with homosexuality just as it has nothing to do with happiness.
Think much?

What Comradephate said.
I know that i've used "gay" (or ghey) as a descriptor and I hardly ever associate it with homosexuality anymore. It's more of a secondary definition now... and its losing ground quickly.

Good. Maybe they can tackle the sexist term "bitch" next.

The word gay use to mean happy. Who the hell
gave it to that group to take over?

Hm, I guess there are even bigots in the ad industry based on some of these comments. Perhaps we aren't a more superior breed like I always thought.
Either way, this campaign isn't going to be effective, but using "gay" in the same way as stupid DOES have a negative connotation, therefore making it insulting. Anyone who has studied communication and psychology knows that these subtleties absolutely do make big differences in the acceptance of social groups. I hope these groups advertising don't give up, but come up with a MUCH better campaign.

I don't say this...and I do not like it...
but I think we should stop using the name of Jesus Christ in vain. This is only fair to Christians. Just as not using the word "gay" in ways it should not be used. You can add the phrase G__ D___ to that list as well. The same for retard. These are all bad, but one is actually very sinful in the beliefs of many. Even if you do not share teh same beliefs, by not saying them at least you will sound like a better person by eliminating them.

Ok so it's not ok to say "that's so gay" but it's ok for people from teh gay community to make shirts that say things like "Marriage is so gay". http://www.marriageissogay.com/
This is ridiculous just like the N word debate of who can and can't say it.
If you don't want others to make comments like "that's so gay" then maybe the gay community should stop making cracks like Marriag is so gay and various other sarcastic comments. Stip picking and choosing when comments suit you.

Brasco,
The Term "Marriage Is So Gay" implies that Marriage is for Gay people.
It says nothing derogatory. It is intended to flip what has become the predominant use of the expression. It's as straightforward as saying that someone with Mental Retardation is retarded.
Sadly, in the case of retardation, some have started to stray from the proper use of the word because the negative connotation has outweighed the initial use.
The word "Nigger" was a derogatory term at inception. As opposed to avoid it, some of the black community embraced it.
How a culture chooses to deal with the words that are used against them is their own choice...it will not make the critics less intolerant but it can disarm them.
Marriage Is So Gay!!! and I'm straight by the way.

The economy is collapsing and these retards are wasting their money on gay shit.

Ok all of you out there. Just grow up. The only way words hurt us is when we let them. The problem is, we have started letting words instead of deeds guide us on the way a person is viewed.IE, Bill Clinton. He is the biggest womanizer and cheater since Jimmy Swaggart, however he always says the right thing and is politically correct. So he is a hero! That is really gay!!

Im completely flabergasted by some of these responses. It amazes me how ignorant people are. Whats so hard to understand about the importance of this campaign. Its not a joke.
Im a 17 year old homosexual. And everyday I have to hear multiple people say things like thats so gay. Faggot. Dyke. And so on. Ive tried many different ways of approaching this issue. Its difficult and I dont know what its going to take to get some change. But I like the Idea of this campaign.
I received some posters in the mail that say things like thats so video gamer and so on. And Im currently working with organizations to give my High School a wake up call. After 2 years of harrassment from even teachers and lack of help from the principal and assistant principal Ive taken matters into my own hands.
This campaign is just another stride toward equality. And Im absolutely excited. <3

The problem with telling people what they can and cannot say, implies that infringement on the first amendment. Then, where does it lead. The fact is, the law already provides for discrimination and illegal actions regardless of race, sex, etc..So theres no need for hate legistlation. It will only invite the govt more into your lives and whittle away at our freedoms and liberties.
If you want to cure or solve something, then you have to appeal to the human heart and our own natures. The best way to do that in my view, is by being persuasive and simply educating people to understand its wrong and not want to do it. In other words, they choose to correct their own behavior.
