Teen-pregnancy ad targets 'Gossip Girl' set
During last night's Gossip Girl, The Candie's Foundation ran a fairly bare-bones PSA encouraging parents to talk with their kids about the teen pregnancy "epidemic." Though Candie's other PSAs are better produced and have more mass star power, there's something delightfully confrontational about the close-cropped camera angles and overbearing soundtrack on this one. A list of talking points for parents was published as a print ad in The New York Times and New York Post encouraging parents to tune into Gossip Girl with their teens and watch the PSA. Amusingly, USA Today pulled the print ad due to potential controversy after reversing its position a few times, finally claiming it was simply "unable to accommodate" it. My money says the pictures of Jamie Lynn Spears and Gov. Palin's daughter Bristol at the top of the ad are what caused USA Today's hissy fit. For those non-USA Today readers who did tune in, I wonder what started more conversation: the PSA or Gossip Girl's tawdry, teen-makeout-filled plot. |

Encouraging parents to watch Gossip Girl as teen pregnancy education? wtf? The NYT and NYP both have a screw loose.

I just saw this ad last night - and there is something seriously wrong with the guy's face. He looks like he's had years of plastic surgery. How is he playing a teenager?

I saw this ad and liked it. Powerful, simple message. But yeas, that guy's face is FREAKY!

I like it too, but KB and Steve Hall are right, that weird guy is totally a predator who lies about his age to unsuspecting teenage girls.

Good ad, but they couldn't pick a guy with a normal face? There are tons of regular looking guys who can speak for 2 seconds.

Teen pregnancy is an important issue. There are health risks for the baby and children born to teenage mothers are more likely to suffer health, social, and emotional problems. Women who become pregnant during their teens have an increased risk for complications, such as premature labor and socioeconomic consequences as well. Many times these teenage girls problems lead them towards addiction, depression, anxiety and some antisocial activities. We have to support responsible policies that will increase the use of contraception and provide more education to teens, parents, and young adults.
