Arby's latest commercials may turn you on
The latest Arby's spots from Merkley + Partners are kinda dumb, and I mean that in the best possible way. One new spot is posted above; three more are here. The vignettes are stupid enough to be entertaining and memorable, but not so overcooked that they outstay their welcome—like bad puns can do when writers get lazy. The casting adds to the fun. The rugged types in "Manly Men" are copiously craggy-faced and more beefy than beefcake. They're like rejects from an audition for The New Village People. In other words: They're perfect! The average couple in "Birthday" (above) are also spot on. They really do seem like everybody's neighbors, and this is exactly the kind of banal kinkiness we'd expect the folks next door to indulge in. My own fantasy involves poppy-seed buns and gives a whole new meaning to the term "drive through." Who knew Arby's food was so sexy? |

These spots are funny because they pay attention to the little things. Especially in the birthday spot. From the music to the casting to the wardrobe, from the timing of the trademark Arby’s hat popping up over his head to the accompanying sound effect, they embraced the details, and that extra few percent of love always makes a difference. And to borrow from one of their competitors, they do it their way. Smart, knowing, relevant humor. Although the floating hat still creeps me out.

Um, funny yet kinda of gross at the same time. Hope they run ads where the woman is in charge and not just there to please "her man."

I think these ads are funny how they stereotype men, and they do it in a tasteful way. This ad could be much more provacative than it is; however, if a kid were to see it, he wouldn't be thinking what adults are thinking. This ad and the one where the guy is at work getting talked out of eating the wimpy sandwich are so amazingly on cue with Arby's target audience that I can't imagine the 25-40 year old, married man (whose wife usually does the cooking) NOT wanting to go eat an Arby's sandwich. Yeah, you can argue that the woman is shown as inferior, but like I said, it's still tasteful and really not all that degrading.

Forget the commercial. What is the name of the song, and who is the artist?
