Progressive's Flo: I'm not trying to be sexy

Flo copy

Dudes have a thing for Flo, the perky Progressive Insurance saleswoman played by actress Stephanie Courtney. Perhaps it's her retro look or, in the words of one smitten blogger, her "kissable red red lips." In search of answers, ABC television's Atlanta affiliate tracked down the 38-year-old actress, who seems a bit baffled by all the fuss.
On her look: "They tease my hair, spray it and stick the headband in it. And the makeup is like painting a portrait on my face. It's insane. It totally changes things on my face. It's like having a mask on."
On her character: "It's me at my silliest. You start off with a script, but at the end they usually let me put a little zinger in there. We put a little mustard on it. That's when it gets fun. Flo could be one of my improv characters, always on and sort of cracked in a weird way."
On her sex appeal: "I don't know what it is. The way I play her, she's pretty much the most asexual thing on TV right now. I think the Geico lizard puts out more sexual vibes than Flo does."
Check out Flo's new holiday spot here.

When I first saw the Flo spots, I thought her makeup was done in a really cute and unique way. I can see why people would find her cute...maybe not "sexy"...but she's definitely a hottie!

Flo always gain my attention whenever the spot comes on during the break. a quick glance over at the imdb forum and many online blogs, it's evident that Flo has a certain mesmerizing quality that people can't seem to describe. some said it's the retro look, while other suggest her perky delivery. strangely, her appeal is universal, this is definitely one of the more memorable ad spokesperson yet.

That character annoys the hell out of me. She's like that annoying girl in school who thought she was 'artsy' but couldn't do anything artsy for crap.

Posted by: Doug | Dec 3, 2008 10:32:56 PM

I've masturbated to her.

Posted by: Bogusky's Feathered Pubes | Dec 4, 2008 2:00:50 PM

I would so totally do her. Then again, I'd do Bea Arthur wearing lederhosen and lathered in Hellman's mayonnaise.

Personally I think the commercial where Flo is talking to the redhead who "hasn't priced car insurance in a while" has two of the genuinely hottest women in TV ads today.

I hit both of them so hard their contacts would fall out.

It's definitely the eyes, guys!!

Sometimes I wonder if her "Grease Appeal" is actually a negative for Progressive. I mean, the Geico Gecko is atleast informative and to the point. Flo is almost a figure of pathos. I mean, she's like some waitress you remember working the Waffle House who tries real hard to support her kids. I almost feel sorry for the inappropriateness and awkwadness of the character. Good acting, but nothing to make me want to try Progressive out.

I mean, the hottie who comes in and asks about prices is very understanding toward the Flo character BUT is taken back by how "Flo" is so easily amused.

The progtrayal of Flo could be taken to another level. I'd like to see her character, which is kind of like an Ugly Betty type, be included in a tv show OR even the big screen. I mean, look how Larry The Cable Guy, a bit character is now so much better known than Jeff Foxworthy?. Okay, I digress..

My question is. Is Flo's character socially important because she tries too hard to be pretty OR is she a total neatral or even negative for Progressive?

Posted by: The Rage | Dec 28, 2008 11:02:46 PM

I'm all about whatever "Flo" brings to the table. I'd let her sell me sand in the desert... but, I do have to say she hasn't quite sold me on insurance yet.

I can't seem to remember the product she's hawking, but Stephanie Courtney (Flo)is totally hot.

Posted by: jsmith | Jan 5, 2009 11:16:25 PM

I hate Her. OMG STOOOOOOOOP please, stooop her annoying voice and her pretentious humor.

Posted by: Toilet Flo | Jan 22, 2009 10:47:50 PM

Now that you mention it, Flo is smokin' hot.

Posted by: fakemccoy | Jan 26, 2009 11:19:20 PM

I think its the retro thing. I like it. She's naughty as hell. I think people like her character because Flo is happy at work. How many of you are happy at work. Its simple appeal. S. Courteney has her role down pat.

Posted by: bob | Feb 3, 2009 2:42:16 AM

She reminds me of a woman my son calls "the overly-enthusiastic waitress" at our favorite restaurant. "What can I get for you to drink?" I'll just have water. "FAN-TASTIC!!! I'll have that right out!"
Her enthusiasm is infectious. Flo is my favorite commercial character, along with the Miller High Life dude. Flo needs her own TV show!

Posted by: Joe King | Feb 3, 2009 9:32:07 AM

Flo is smart, sexy, and silly. She is someone you would want to ask out on a date. It would be a blast.

Posted by: Doug | Feb 5, 2009 9:08:18 PM

I think she is ok looking. I would still do her the favor. Then again, I am not too picky.

Posted by: Tito | Feb 6, 2009 4:10:21 PM

A ball gag and a roll of duct tape would do

Posted by: Yeah | Feb 8, 2009 11:26:28 PM

I CANNOT stand her- she is so annoying and stupid.

She has a ho-ditz persona that appeals to mens' fantasies. She is the antithesis of over-aggressive, too intelligent, feminism.

Posted by: Anon | Feb 16, 2009 6:08:10 PM

She's got "it". Hot.

Posted by: bugwirm | Feb 17, 2009 5:46:05 AM

I LOVE Flo! She reminds me of Kari Byron from Mythbusters. I have Stephanie Courtney in the Glade Plug-In commercial where she is at that woman's house and they are doing yoga. I think she was in another, but can't be for certain what it was. Anyway, I just LOVE her character!

Flo FTW ^_^

She's just so perky! I love that silliness/goofiness she portrays!

I hate that bitch

Posted by: phenixs | Feb 23, 2009 11:19:16 AM

You shouldn't be buying insurance based on a character you see in a commercial. You should buy insurance based on comparison shopping and go with who offers the best rate. If Progressive is that company, you should go with them...Flo or no Flo.

And I agree, Flo is a hottie!

Posted by: The Man | Feb 24, 2009 3:27:15 PM

I love her happy perky character, and she's kind of a smart ass about it too which is why I like it.

Anyway, she rocks.

Posted by: ca.girl | Mar 5, 2009 6:28:47 PM

I was attracted to "Flo" from the first moment I saw her. Now I know that I'm not alone! I don't give a rat's ass about the insurance company, but I'm always glad to see her in the commercials.

Coincidentally, it turns out that the actress is from Stony Point, NY, only a few miles south of here.

Posted by: Dave | Mar 9, 2009 1:29:15 PM

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who finds her utterly irresistable and totally sexy. The first time I saw her do that line about "Just a little humor... oh look, there it goes!" my jaw just dropped open. I immediately thought, "I MUST HAVE HER!!"

Posted by: Ken in RI | Mar 11, 2009 1:54:08 PM

I couldn't place my attraction to the character Flo, until an episode of Californication nailed it on the head. Hank Moody is hanging at Lou Ashbys house, when he takes notice of this prim and proper hyper woman on her cooking show. They figure out Hank wants t hate f**k this woman (taking a "good girl" and having the filtiest raunchiest most unimaginable sex possible). Because Lou is so rich and powerful he makes this happen. She turns out to be extreamly kinky. Not only fulfilling a wish but fulfilling a fantasy. Needless to say, every time I see Flo on TV I exclaim "I want to hate f**k her".

Get over it, It's a ad character,for heaven sakes! BTY,glad she's (SC) got a job! :D

Posted by: Samborez | Mar 16, 2009 10:12:46 PM

I think Flo is more worthy of her own show than the Geico cave man.

Posted by: Whatever | Mar 23, 2009 10:41:38 AM

I cannot believe what I'm reading. I can't believe that A) people care this much about a stupid, annoying character from a commercial, and B) that people actually find this person remotely attractive. You people need lives.

Posted by: Mike | Mar 23, 2009 10:49:23 AM

I don't get the objectives of these commercials. She acts like a jerk? Or at least snarky and isn't funny.

What's the point

Posted by: Chris O. | Mar 24, 2009 12:02:24 PM

im in love with flo

Posted by: paul | Mar 28, 2009 5:08:03 PM

OMG!! This is perhaps the best commercial series so far as product identification goes. Courtney is a doll, Flo is too. She is just an actress and a comic with great timing. But If I had to make a choice between the two I would take Flo, but I know she is not real, she is a CHARACTER put there to sell you insurance. Must be working, she is a long campaign and they keep getting better Okay, so I am a huge fan. I find the character cute and sexy and Courtney's (yes, she is great with improv) "zingers" something i (blush!) look forward to hearing the next one.

Flo (Stephanie) Is Gorgeous ...... Not All That Pancake Makeup, But The Incredibly Flaky Personality. She's So Real, She's Gorgeous.

Posted by: Danny | Apr 9, 2009 5:54:26 PM

Flo haunts me in my sleep. I love her. There is no bad in her character and she could lead me anywhere.

Posted by: rcaseswt | Apr 11, 2009 8:45:28 AM

I think she needs to be covered in tattoos and should do porn with Burning Angels.
I don't know why but she just looks like the kind of girl that is just tatted up. Shes a fuckin babe.

Posted by: Randy | Apr 11, 2009 3:41:47 PM

Flo is so quirky that she seems genuine. She lets us know flawlessly that there is nothing going on in there other than thinking about insurance. It this way, she seems vulnerable and sweet. She's every man's fantasy about a focused woman who can be surprised by affection. This is the only spokesperson who has actually made me go out and get a quote on insurance. I'd rather be in her surprised hands than the "good hands" of that tough black guy from Allstate.

Posted by: aurum79 | Apr 12, 2009 12:01:55 PM

Flo: "There's no discount for agreeing with me."

Me: "I wouldn't care if there was a substantial penalty."

Posted by: Frank | Apr 13, 2009 12:05:09 PM

Flo is so hot. It's her irreverent, quirky, humor, her large, round eyes, and her infectious enthusiasm.

Posted by: tomo | Apr 16, 2009 10:53:10 PM

"Infectious enthusiasm."

Yeah, that is a big part of it. How many people these days are cheerful or enthusiastic? She is a nice break from grim and glum.

And yeah, I know it is a character and yeah, maybe it would wear thin 24/7 but it is really nice in a 30 second spot.

One other big thing is Stephanie's voice in the voiceover is GREAT! Enthusiastic, pleasant, happy, and, somehow, down to earth.

Flo the character is someone that, given first impressions, I'd like to hang around with and see what happened. Is that sexy? Yeah, I suppose it is.

Posted by: Tripp | Apr 18, 2009 1:07:49 PM

"Dudes" like Flo because she is like the "cool chick" who will let them get away with everything that their wife won't. Flo is the ugly/pretty tramp that men fantasize about having a secret affair with. What they don't know is that Flo would also leave them high and dry after spending all their money (the unofficial payment for blowjobs from these types of insincere tramps). Then their wives would leave them too because these men are fucking morons... then they get to head right to the poor house. Serves people right for bein Flo lovers!! Live in the real world... no woman who is actually worth shit would ever act like this idiot does...

That girl is a hideous freak, the commercial is awful! WTF! SHe is a A self-taught psychopath who vigilantly maintains her mental ill health and smells of rotten eggs,

Posted by: Jimbo | Apr 20, 2009 5:00:18 PM

I would wreck that shit. The first thing I thought when I saw that commercial was hell yeah. What makes her hot the retro clean look for one and her quirky cute sexiness. The bright red lipstick is always a + factor.

Posted by: 00face | Apr 24, 2009 12:05:12 AM

We love you Flo!

Posted by: Russ | Apr 25, 2009 4:27:09 PM

@ The Rage...

Damn, man. It's a commercial. Lighten up.

Posted by: bill | Apr 28, 2009 10:47:15 PM

Everyone calling 'Flo' ugly, is probably dog-meat themselves! Flo isn't your average blonde skeleton with no personality. So what if it's just a commercial? A character is a character, and she has something unique, there...
