Astronauts are the stars in Louis Vuitton adLouis Vuitton reaches for the heavens in a new print ad starring astronauts Buzz Aldrin, Sally Ride and Jim Lovell. The three appear in this photo, shot by Annie Leibovitz, sitting on the hood of a old truck, gazing up at the moon, on which Aldrin walked 40 years ago this July 20. There will also be a companion video in which the three reminisce about their space travels. (Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon, apparently declined to be involved.) The campaign, by Ogilvy & Mather, marks the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing and is supposed to be a respectful homage to the astronauts, though the product it's endorsing, the $1,530 Icare travel bag, is named for the Greek hero who flew too close to the sun. Huh. Anyway, this continues LV's strategy of using older spokespeople, like Mikhail Gorbachev and Keith Richards, to entice baby boomers who need fancy handbags to distract from how old they've become themselves. So, they should stop calling Armstrong and get Tony Curtis on the phone. |

WHAT!
This is a total rip off of the award winning Ogilvy&Mather American Express - "My life. My card." - 'Questionnaire' print campaign. It won a slew of awards just two years ago and also used conceptual photographs from Annie Leibovitz.
It's the same campaign. They just dropped off the 'Questionnaire!'
CRAZY!!!

Ogilvy:
Annie Leibovitz has done a lot of print ads, including the recent Disney campaign. Just because another company uses her photos doesn't make it a rip-off.
Personally, I like these ads because there isn't a lot of text to clutter up the picture and more importantly, they feature older people who have actually accomplished something with their lives, instead of just having blank-faced models.

It looks great. It is interesting to see a fashion brand paying homage to someone other than celebrities and models.

Are you kidding me? This is an Annie L. AmEx MLMC campaign. It's really pathetic that hack agencies like McGarry Bowen can copy a hugely successful campaign and say they get creative credit. Sad really.

Are you rolling around now? Break out of that box and beat the crap out of all the pathetic account people who have condemned your name sake into the ground. How many times can O&M produce the same campaign for different clients? Many, many, many, but they can only get props for the first creative concept. AMEX My life my card kicked ass. Nothing less and not this.
